Where the action is: Rice, Moss props popular with sharps

Each year, sportsbooks post more and more props for the Super Bowl. While the alternative wagers are made more for the frenzied betting public, sharp bettors have become big fans of prop bets.

According to John Avello, sportsbook director at the Wynn in Las Vegas, prop wagers make up about 20 percent of the total Super Bowl handle. His book is currently dealing around 200 Super Bowl XLVII props.

Online sportsbooks, which can post props on non-game related events such as the national anthem, Beyonce’s halftime show and which color Gatorade will douse the winning coach, have even more.

San Francisco 49ers second-year sensation Colin Kaepernick is drawing a lot of action for his game props, but some other players have been singled out and picked on by sharps.

Action on Baltimore RB Ray Rice indicates wiseguys don’t expect a big day from the shifty back. Money had come in on the under in Rice’s total carries (17.5), total yards rushing (69.5) and longest run (17.5).

“Kind of went all under on Rice and that happens sometimes,” Avello told Covers. “People just key in on these things.”

Another player grabbing early sharp money is 49ers veteran receiver Randy Moss, who is drawing solid action to be the first player to score a touchdown (+2,000) and even win Super Bowl MVP (+4,500).

“Moss would be a pretty big winner for the players,” Dave Mason of BetOnline.ag told Covers.

Game props drawing sharp money at the Wynn include money taking the over for the largest lead (13.5), the over in yardage of first punt (42) and under in total fumbles lost (1.5). The under for total 49ers rushing yards (107.5) and over for Joe Flacco’s total completions (20.5) have also been hit hard by early sharp action.

“Sometimes these are just scalps,” says Avello. “They see the number higher or lower elsewhere and they want to get down.”

I don't know about MVP, but I certainly like the over on Moss's total yards receiving.
