Single-game sports betting takes another step in Canada

Canadian bettors are one step closer to being able to make single-game wagers on sporting events.

The Windsor Star reported that Parliament’s standing committee on justice and human rights voted unanimously in support of MP Joe Comartin’s bill supporting single-game betting on Thursday.

The bill, which looks to amend the Criminal Code to allow any province to legalize single-game betting, will now go for a third reading in the House of Commons. Multi-sport wagers are currently legal in Canada.

“Single-event sports betting would provide Canadian gaming operations with a significant competitive advantage over U.S. competitors,” Comartin said in a statement on Thursday. “Studies show this slight change to the Criminal Code would generate about $70 million in wagering in Windsor alone.”

Comartin also said that he estimates his bill’s approval would generate 250 jobs in Windsor, Ontario, and would cut down on illegal gambling.

The bill will likely get its third reading sometime this spring and would then move on to the Senate following that.

ya no matter how you slice this, it will NOT favour the player. I am in BC and we have 2 game parlays as a minimum. The only real advantage to the BCLC/OLG system (other than the fact that you are 100% sure you will get paid if you DO win) is that the average Joe can lay down 20 bucks on a friday night and watch his leafs lose while having a bit of excitement doing it. If you are in it for the money and not as a casual weekend gambler, this system will never work.

I really don't see this happening either, in BC we got sportsaction which is a 2 play minimal parlay, the oddset are 3 way plays, the pointspread and over/unders are +100 for 2 team plays.+300 for 3 teamers. Huge cash cow for the goverment. If this were to happen the vig would be about -125, which I could handle if I can buy my tickets at any lottery retailer.

totally agree olg just srews everyone over. Off shore books is the way to go for better odds and payouts. Stay away from OLG, another reason we canadians get screwed over by the government

I agree. It wouldnt be Ontario if you weren't getting fucked by the provincial government somehow.

Agree. They have been screwing ontarians with their brutal odds. A 3 game parlay with olg would give you a payout of about 30% less then any offshore sportsbook.

So now I can go a head and trust the OLG for all their hard word and fair play? My ass. They've been screwing over Ontario residents for years with their terrible odds and minimum 3-game parlays (2-game at Casino Niagra). They've balanced the scale so far in their favour with 3-game parlays, the only way they can re-coup that money and more in the future to guarantee a profit is to offer what? 20 cent, 30 cent money lines? OLG always finds a way to win, and with the casual bettor being allowed to wager on one game, that won't change.
