Single-game sports betting takes another step in Canada
Canadian bettors are one step closer to being able to make single-game wagers on sporting events. The Windsor Star
reported that Parliament’s standing committee on justice and human rights voted unanimously in support of MP Joe Comartin’s bill supporting single-game betting on Thursday.
The bill, which looks to amend the Criminal Code to allow any province to legalize single-game betting, will now go for a third reading in the House of Commons. Multi-sport wagers are currently legal in Canada.
“Single-event sports betting would provide Canadian gaming operations with a significant competitive advantage over U.S. competitors,” Comartin said in a statement on Thursday. “Studies show this slight change to the Criminal Code would generate about $70 million in wagering in Windsor alone.”
Comartin also said that he estimates his bill’s approval would generate 250 jobs in Windsor, Ontario, and would cut down on illegal gambling.
The bill will likely get its third reading sometime this spring and would then move on to the Senate following that.
