Heisman Trophy favorite Cameron Newton's status forces Vegas to pull odds

At 9:07 a.m. Las Vegas time, a professional sports bettor bet Georgia +8.5 against Auburn. Five minutes later, Jeff Stoneback, sportsbook manager at the MGM Mirage, took the game off the board.

“We’re hearing reports that Cameron Newton’s status may be a game-time decision,” said Stoneback, Wednesday morning. “A professional player came in this morning bet Georgia and soon after we got an alert from one of our services about the news.”

Stoneback said the game was starting to fall off the board online around the same time and that he would wait to hear more definitive news regarding Newton’s status before putting it back on the board.

"Cameron Newton will be playing Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs and I want to get that off the table," Auburn coach Gene Chizik told reporters in a teleconference on Wednesday.

If Newton is suspended, multiple oddsmakers have estimated that Auburn, which was set between -7 and -8.5, will fall to as low as a 3-point favorite.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it dropped by 6 or 7 points,” said Stoneback. “When Jake Locker got ruled out against Oregon, the number moved 7 points.”

Newton is at the center of reports that he and his family asked for money during his recruitment before signing with Auburn. Two Mississippi State recruiters said late Tuesday that Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and his father, Cecil Newton, admitted in phone conversations that they intended to be paid for playing at a certain school during Newton's recruitment last year, ESPN reported.

The alleged conversations were relayed by Mississippi State compliance officials to Southeastern Conference compliance officials in January, the report stated.

In one of the conversations, Cecil Newton was said to have chosen Auburn over Mississippi State because "the money was too much."

The NCAA is already investigating the Newton's recruiting process. Cam Newton has previously denied any wrongdoing.

Vegas is stupid. Newton is innocent til proven guilty, in fact he did not do anything wrong, it was the people who said they knew him. Also, the colleges make millions of dollars every year and the athletes are given NOTHING! That's not fair. If u did all the work and someone else got the financial reward what would u do? Get some of that money for yourself,u would be a FOOL if u didn't, particularly if u could suffer a career ending injury everytime u step on the field.

I had my hunches on betting against Auburn...but didn't think the whole issue would snowball as fast as it did. wish I would have done it though....+8.5 and if Newton doesn't play...is probably going to be best bet the public will ever see in their lifetime. and we all know in gambling...nothing is a guarantee, but a team without the best player in the country...and getting +8.5...is REALLY CLOSE to it. If cam doesn't play...my money will be on the under.

The problem isn't this one player (or the many before just like him), it's the system that exploits these young men for millions of dollars of profit and then doesn't compensate or share any of it with the actual talent... And you expect these guys to go through university as a poor-starving student? YA RIGHT

I have no idea if Cam Newton is innocent or guilty of the allegations. But is a sad commentary of our times when people are apparently so jaded they think violating recruiting rules is no big deal and lable people who complain about as HATERS.

It wasn't Ian Fitzsimmons from KESN in Dallas. It was someone impersonating Ian at the KESN and some idiot blogger took what was said out of context and tweeted that Ian said that Cam Newton was going to be suspended. Complete FUBAR!

The alleged conversations were relayed by Mississippi State compliance officials to Southeastern Conference compliance officials in January, the report stated. And here it is November, the dude is killing the Heisman, and the crooked SEC is now getting called out!

Dallas radio guy got his twitter account hacked into and said the NCAA would suspend Cam within 3-4 hours at 10 oclock today but no dice. It caused the books to shift and somebody put huge money on thUGA and it caused Vegas to shut it down now. If it comes back low get all over it with Auburn.

Mississippi State does have one heck of a basketball recruiting class coming in and they have 2 players that have to sit out a 3rd of the season for violations. Why are they making such a deal out of this? Oh, let me answer my own question, HATERS!

Damn, that's what I call value betting. Not to mention that you've got a decent chance with Georgia +8.5 even if Newton does play. Nice scoop, DP.
