Hi guys, here's where I stand for the day:
Colts win, but Bears cover. Colts win by 3 with Adam V. in the spotlight again.
If forced to choose I would go Under, and Tails on the coin flip.
BOL to everyone today....

Yeah CJ, and it is not like the Lions don't try to turn it around. I remember back when I was in school there, in the early 80s, I interviewed then new coach Dick Harter, and he went on about how he would turn it around. Closed practices and such. Almost 25 yrs ago! And what is with the S-WB Red Barons switching affiliation to the YANKEES!?! Breaks my heart.
Back to the SB game... 3rd&L got me thinking maybe I will make a wager on this game. On the coin flip! That and some good cheap prop bets. I do agree that Colts are capable of putting it away early... but Chi is not. They coulda/shoulda put it away early v. the Saints and could not.
I see the 2nd tier RBs as having a big effect in this game. D. Rhodes really impressed me last week, and also C. Benson for the Bears seemed to come of age. I think we can expect to see both of them get at least 10-12 carries apiece, and one of them could be an unexpected STAH.
And I feel this could be a low scoring affair, closer to the 15-7 Colts win over Balt than the shootout v. NE.

Man, the formatting on this thread is all kind of messed up. Covers team, we luv ya, but methinks you are due for a version upgrade in the offseason.
ColonelJim, I would leave me out of the picking list -- as stated earlier I won't be betting on the game (really) and although I think the Colts will prolly win, the past few days I've been wondering if maybe da Bears are not ripe for an upset. And I see our Nits got blown out by Iowa, big surprise there, huh?
3rd&L, I see you are enjoying these weeks, as well you should. These pre-SB weeks don't come around all that often, and when they do you just soak em up for all their worth.
I said earlier I'm starting to think the Bears actually have a chance. Here's why:
- Bears play really well outdoors... not an incredible advantage, but Colts have no stadium advantage this time around.
- Bears have a special teams edge, especially on kick returns, and especially since Colts return coverage has been weak. Also Gould is a great kicker, not a huge advantage for Adam V.
- Grossman does blow -- really hard -- but he has weathered the storm of criticism all year. He does not have to be pretty or elegant for the Bears to win, or at least cover. His WRs do find ways to make plays. And he played his college ball in the state of FL -- so there is some comfort there.
- Colts's Harper has a bum ankle, forcing a reshuffling in the secondary. This is a more significant injury than Peyton's thumb.
- Possibility remains that the Colts won their big game last week. 3rd&L, you even expressed this right after the Pats game. You said something like "honestly even if they don't win the SB I don't care, as long as they slayed the dragon that is the Pats" or something to that effect. I am sure with a few days to rest you are not thinking the same way, but this dynamic does exist. The Colts have succeeded where they have not gone before. Can they possibly gather as much emotion as they did in the 2nd half v. the Pats? Doubtful.
- That Pats-Colts game was rough. REAL rough. I could not keep up with all the injuries, major and minor, on both sides. I have to think there is some fallout from that, much like the Pats got worn down at SD. The extra week should allow them to recover enough, but I just wonder.
- This setup sorta reminds me of Pats-Rams in Jan 2002. One high-octane dome team offense, going against an underdog with a good defense and an unproven QB.
- Bears don't have to sack PM a lot -- they just need to pressure him. It ain't da meat, it's da motion. They can do that.
Not predicting a Bears win outright, and again I'm not betting on this. (Really!) But I will be watching with great interest, and won't blame anyone from taking CHI +7.

Damn, some of you guys are trying real hard to make this the worst thread ever. But with 2 weeks to go there's still time on the clock.
I prolly won't even bet this game, as I got cleaned out on NE -3. I do mostly college FB and do my big cash out after Jan 1, saving a little bit for fun in the BCS and playoffs. Rode it with NE and a small side on the 'Aints. Also gettin' set for a week in Puerto Rico the Monday after, so I'll be distracted with that.
I do think this is Peyton's year, and don't see how they can lose. But after the Bears showing Sun. it is hard to take 7 for granted. Still, all through the first half Grossman did his best to implode that team. Score should have been more like 66-14 with a good QB. He is no game manager... he is an assistant manager who sometimes blows off work. His entire game is throw an alley-oop pass, and pray his WR boxes out or gets a pass int call. One of these years the NFL will change the rules to disallow 50-yd PI penalties.
Looking back to last year, I can't help but think that were it not for Tony Dungy's son's suicide late in the year, they may well have won then too. Nothing vs. the Stillers, as they got great at the right time. But how can any team survive such an emotional tragedy? This is a solid Colt team, and they are believing right now. And the AFC just rocks all over the NFC. I would take any of the 4 teams -- ok, forget Balt, I would take Indy, SD, or NE over Chicago. And I have nothing vs. da Beers franchise, in fact I like 'em and have been there twice.
I would not be concerned with PM's thumb, it looked pretty good on that first pass after the ball changed hands. One of the plays of the game in fact. Heat should be a non-factor as both teams should be in Miami for a full week to adjust.
I have no opinion on the O/U.
BigDaddy, hope you went with the Pats at the half last week!
ColonelJim, way to rebound, just lay off the Nittany Lions BBall.
3rd&L, you know yer gonna lay that 7 come next week. But see if you can get lucky with a lower line, or maybe you want to buy a point or so. I might also look out for some good props, as you'll already be good if they win it. This one is for Archie... and he gets the game ball.
Meanwhile I'm looking for an over/under on how many glory to gods there will be after this Colt win. In case you weren't keeping track, I counted three -- Polian, Dungy and Peyton all gave the ref in the sky credit.
BOL all...

Slight correction to my post above -- Pats have 7 players remaining from their 2001 supabow team. I forgot special teamer Larry Izzo. The others are Brady, Bruschi, Vrabel, Seymour, Faulk, and Light.
Also, there's been a lot of talk about Brady-Mannin = Montana-Marino. Well, there's another example like this that goes even further. It's Bill Russell v. Wilt Chamberlain. Many of you were in diapers or not born yet when these two awesome centers went at it. Wilt had all the stats (100 pts in a game, 50.4 ppg avg one year, 50 or more points in a regular season game 118 times, most chicks boned in a lifetime) but Russell had all the rings.
Wilt was Rookie of the Year his first year. Pasted from the wikipedia:
With Chamberlain in the pivot, Warriors improved from a last place division finish in the 1958-59 season to the second best record in the NBA. The Warriors, however, would lose to the Boston Celtics in the Conference Finals that year, despite Chamberlain outscoring his opposing center Bill Russell by 81 points. This would become a repeated occurrence in Chamberlain's career.
It goes further. Read this and tell me there is no comparison to Bill Polian whining about the way the refs call the game, or to the strategy the Pats used to beat the Colts in the 2005 AFC champ game.
The rookie Chamberlain then shocked the Warriors' fans by saying he was thinking of retiring. He was tired being subject of double- and triple teams, and teams hacking him down with hard fouls. Chamberlain feared to lose his cool one day, a thing which he did not want to happen. Celtics forward Tom Heinsohn said his team ruthlessly exploited his only weakness, free throw shooting, with an early version of the Hack-a-Shaq (a tactic in which a poor free throw shooter is intentionally fouled, in the hope that he misses free throws and the team gets an easy ball possession without giving up many points). "Half the fouls against him were hard fouls", Heinsohn continued, "he [Chamberlain] took the most brutal pounding of any player ever". An additional point was that Chamberlain refrained from retaliating, and preferred to play through the many fouls. [1] This tactic proved highly effective against Chamberlain. Since the Celtics were in the same Eastern Division as the Warriors, Chamberlain and his teammates could not even reach the NBA Finals without finding a way to beat them. The Boston Celtics were in the midst of their legendary run of winning 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. Wilt did get a ring, in fact 2, in '67 and '72. So there is hope that Manning can get one this year. But if I were a betting man -- and I am -- I go the other way.

Those "new kids on the block" probably had little or no chance to beat you no matter how bad they wanted to. Luckily, such a massive difference in talent doesn't exist in NFL games not involving the Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions. And Peyton Manning is no new kid on the block. Maybe I am underestimating Tom Brady's will to win, but here's the thing. I believe the guy is maniacal about winning, and puts that goal above all else. But even as driven as he is, I just can't magine that any athlete can maintain the same drive and the same hunger after having achieved so much success. There may not be much of a dropoff in desire in Brady's case, because he is the consumate team player, but there has to be some. I firmly believe that Peyton Manning's desire to finally get one over on Tom Brady in an AFC title game outweighs Brady's desire to stick it to Manning for a third time. MrBator, I've enjoyed your posts this season, and have benefitted from them. You have my respect. However, you are on the wrong team here. The Pats will do it again. A few reasons why:
- Your above statement is fueled by belief and nothing else. Just because Manning has not beaten Brady in no way gives him an edge. In fact, there is more pressure on him. Brady was asked which is his favorite super bowl ring. His answer? "The NEXT one." Think about this.... you are a successful bettor. Very successful. Does that mean you rest on your next pick and just flip a coin, knowing you will be ok with whatever result happens? F*ck no. You are a competitor, and driven to keep doing it NOW AND AGAIN. Same thing applies here.
- Lots of kudos and excitement about the Colts resurgent defense the last two weeks, but at the same time Manning has struggled and the Colts O has been mediocre if not outright weak. The sentiment is that Manning and the O will rebound to their old ways, but the D won't. 15 pts on 5 FGs... 5 INTs and 1 TD... that is optimism at its finest... a double standard. Nothing wrong with optimism, but that's not a good betting frame of mind.
- You mentioned earlier how the public was mistaken in giving the Pats props based on the past... that this is not the same team. No, it is not. In fact it is better in some ways. Otherwise, please explain to me how and why THIS Patriots team set a franchise record for fewest points allowed. Their defensive line of Seymour, Warren (the real star this year, DNP last time these teams met) and Wilfork, in a 3-4 that Manning struggles with, is their best D-line ever. (You can throw in Jarvis Green as well when a 4th is needed.)
- You made a point about how there were only 8 or so players still on the Pats from the 2001 team. Actually only 6 remain. But remember the team won two super bowls since that time. Also, there are only something like 12 players (forget exact #) remaining from the Colts team that lost to the Pats in the 2005 AFC champ game. That goes both ways.
What does NOT go both ways is the coaching and preparation for each team, and the character within the team that continually finds ways to win against all odds. Those things don't show up on the stat sheet. Actually, no, they do -- in the final score.
All the best to you and thanks for your contribution here. But I suggest that you be prepared for an in-game strategy in case adjustments are necessary.

Wow, what a game today. Not exactly well-played, but exciting. Very thankful the Pats came through today, saved my butt! I lost 3 bets yesterday, but won 3 today, incl. one ML on NE.
The way NE was playing the 2nd half I thought they were done for. If you had told me the Pats would have essentially no running game and that Brady would throw 3 picks, I would have figgered them to lose by 3 TDs. However the SD youth / inexperience showed up, in silly penalties and mental errors. Plus the Pats D played great -- contained LT and made Rivers win the game. He almost did, but not quite. (And yes, holding LT 123 yds is containing him.)
BigD glad to see you win at the half... hope that at least offsets any final bets.
Lefty hope you could still enjoy the win, or maybe that you layed off altogether!
3rd&L - I can see you are on the Colts early for next week. Should be fun. We'll see what happens... I expect Indy to be favored by 4, maybe more.

Lots of talk about how the Pats WRs are bad, we've heard it for weeks and it will continue. Check this paste from an article in today's Globe:
Monday night, four of the team's receivers -- Caldwell, Gaffney, Jackson, and Kight -- celebrated as their alma mater, the University of Florida, won the national championship. Now they are back to work, hoping to contribute to their own championship, while at the same time proving their critics wrong.
I have to think that some of that Gator spirit carries over -- they have been disrespected as a WR group and will be ready and focused. Plus -- their top WR, Reche Caldwell, came from the Chargers and knows the SD DB's tendencies well.

BigDaddy, looks like you made the right call, or at least not making the wrong one. Kudos and thanks to all on the board, and see you on the NFL threads.
I'm still in shock over that game last night. What an unforgettable night for Fla fans... two national champions in one year. But I have to think Ohio St beat themselves as well. Starting with tackling Ted Ginn in the end zone after his opening TD and injuring his foot! When was the last time you ever heard of THAT? Especially in a championship game. Then the 15-yd penalties on each of their ensuing kickoffs, putting Fla in golden field position.
But OSU was out-coached, out-prepared, and out-motivated. Troy Smith throwing for 32 yards? EXCUSE ME??? I guess the Heisman jinx lives another day.
One last thing regarding the popular topic of SPEED. Joe Paterno talks about one thing in all of his pressers. And that is "playing faster." Yeah Fla has good team speed and all, and hard to not think they are a faster team after last night. But it is APPARENT speed that really killed Ohio State. When JoePa talks about "playing faster" what he is referring to is when you feel confident, when you know what you are doing, when you can stop thinking about what you are supposed to do, and just play -- you PLAY FASTER.
Clearly this is what Fla did last night. And guess what -- they also looked bigger last night.
Congrats to all who went with the dog last night. I had a nice overall run in the bowl season and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only question that remains is....
What about Boise??? The only undefeated team still standing, and stuck at # 5? Maybe in the polls, but they are surely ranked higher in the hearts of this country.

Never mind. Watch -- Meyer is getting calls from the NY Giants and the Miami Dolphins this week. I would parlay both of those calls happening if they offered it. And there could be more teams.
Scumbags don't beat Ohio St in the BCS championship as a 7+ pt DOG. On both sides of the ball.
Fla defense is really impressive. As I say this the Fla offense is moving again. I still say it is not speed but schemes -- Tressel is getting an ass-whupping for his coaching job.

Let's not forget Texas Tech vs Minnesota -- Minny was ahead 38-7 late in the 4th qtr and lost in OT.
Anything is possible! But Ted Ginn out, after that opening kick, damn, that's tough.
Obviously there is such a LOW LOW chance of THAT happening you can't even measure it.
Is that FATASS lady an Ohio State fan? Well, if you peruse their stands, you'd see some "ladies" who could play the role on tv.
I'm still pissed off that Fla is not playing Arkansas tonight -- then we could have Dick versus Leak!!!

Woke up the next mornin' feelin' something wet and sticky under the covers, raised them and looked at my hands, and YEEEEEW WEEEEE!! SHIT....EVERYWHERE....All over my legs and backside, 2 inches deep and watery.
Well, I done what any norman full-growed man might do, I ran for the bathroom, throwing up all the way, and jumped in my shower.
I guess my lover for the night awoke at all my machinations in great wonderment and ponder.
Course....I didn't wait around to see, I hightailed it downstairs to drown out the smell (in my mind still) with some 102 proof Wild Turkey, with some 102 proof Fighting Cock, for chasers.
The little lady, in her great embarrassment, bundled up all the bedclothes, and ran lickety-split for the laundry room, bareass and all, dribbling drops of brown liquid all the way, I might add.
Suffice it to say, I never asked for her phone number. Found out later that she was a purebred alcoholic and in a bad way. I sure couldn't tell the night I picked her up though, as she was my fair princess for the evening and I was teetotally sockered. TRUE STORY, I laugh at myself everytime I think about it.
GO FIGURE!! How many here can actually say that they've been shit on, by a good-looking woman at that, without going into any kinky or sicko kinda connatations? Not many, I bet....heh heh heh Aw man, that is raw and uncensored! Her last name wasn't Tressel, was it???
Hey BJ11, 3rd & Long, Maui, and the rest... congrats on picking the right team!

Don't forget Coaches my friend. Give me Urban Myer anytime over Tressel.
He does much more, with less talent, as well proven in his past coaching job/s. Absolutely.... he is proving it tonight! Urban Meyer's stock just went up so high, I expect him to be offered the NY Giants job by halftime! Amazing.
Congrats to all the FLA backers -- I was dead wrong, and now I have to go look through my freezer to see if I have any frozen crow I can defrost in the microwave.

The game is slowing down now, somewhat. OSU needs one good stop to regain some confidence... and catch their breath! Interesting how Fla is finding tons of room to throw against the zone, while OS receivers were blanketed in man coverage. Although they adjusted the last drive. I do think this has more to do with schemes than speed. Schemes -- and desire!
