Ben Johnson, Bears and the JJ McCarthy Overreaction

At some point in last night's game both sides of bettors were right about the Vikings and Bears.

It was Minnesota's ability of finding a way to run all over Chicago in the 4th qtr that took pressure off McCarthy, enabling him to make throws when it mattered. McCarthy's QB rating of 52 put him in an elite category of mediocre QB performances at Soldier Field shared by greats like Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields.

As for Ben Johnson? This week's game at Detroit could be biggest game in his head coaching career for a couple of reasons.

Facing his former team for the first time, you would expect anxiety and tension to be a little high. Adding to that a response to last night's capitulation is vital for himself and the Bears.

Ben got out coached badly. He showed no signs of offensive genius that he was credited for in Detroit. Was it first game head coaching jitters with a lead at home or is this who he is. We know KOC is a top flight coach and he showed it with second half adjustments. As did Flores who once again shows that he is one of the best in the business. The different moving schemes and fronts they showed Williams in the 4Q rattled him and he was seeing ghosts.

Kevin O’Connell is a good coach and it was at that point Santos missed that 44 yard FG in the 4Q he was able to reach his players. This is the outcome when your team wants to play for their coach.

I may have been a little unfair in my criticism of Johnson as O’Connell is more advanced in his coaching career after a couple of seasons.

Make no mistake people, this week’s game v Lions is a critical game for Johnson, Williams and the Bears.

It’s either going to get everyone on board or send their season crashing to the ground.
