Starting this thread outside of my Playoff thread. I think this should be a really good series. I have watched almost every Pacers game this season and watched every single one of their playoff games. I know this team well. They like to push pace and Carlisle is highly underrated as a coach (see Dallas Mavericks 2011). Pacers love to push pace, but the problem here in this game is that they are on the road and they are not a very good road team. Yes, it is the Playoffs and you would expect guys to show up but I think theyll have a tough time today in the opener against the Cavaliers, who have looked laser focused.
The Pacers were 20-20 on the road in the regular season.
The Cavaliers were 34-7 at home in the regular reason.
The Pacers won the season series 3-1, but if you look at those games, the last two were at the end of the season and most of the starters for Cleveland were sitting.
In round #1 vs the heat, the Cavaliers had the 4 most efficient stretch in offense in playoff HISTORY. That was after finishing the regular season with the #2 most efficient offense in the league. If you look at last years playoffs, the Pacers ranked #4 in most efficient offense and both of these teams are offensive juggernauts that look to score at will and run complex offensive schemes. Loaded with ball handlers and shooters, and stretch 4's (Siakam and Mobley) who can both shoot if the defender drops in pick-and-roll situations, I look for this series to be a filled with points.
How do the Cavaliers attack Haliburton and the pick and roll with a stretch big? The Bucks failed miserably because Lopez is not as mobile as Mobley and Jarrett Allen, and Lopez was forced out of the lineup. I think the Cavaliers will do a much better job defending the pick-and-roll action and will force the Pacers into tougher shots in these situations.
I think that Cavaliers have 3 of the best pick and roll/pop players in Mitchell/Garland/Ty Jerome, and the Pacers showed last series and in their close out game that they do not switch very well. This will be problematic for them this series. The Cavs are miles ahead of the Bucks and I think with the added rest and focus, they will jump out on this Pacers team in this game one.
Cavaliers will start out fast and I think they will be ahead in the first quarter and half. I look for the Pacers to push pace/tempo and to make a run in the third, but in the end the Cavaliers will pull away due to their superior defense, better transition defense, home court, and better depth off the bench. The bench scoring in the Miami series is what led to such impressive wins for the Cavaliers and I think the same continues today...
