Charles Schwab Challenge Picks, Live Odds, and Field: Tracking the Action at Colonial

With a storyline-filled PGA Championship now in the rearview, the PGA Tour heads to Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas for the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Scottie Scheffler was at the forefront of it all and is returning to Colonial as a short favorite after finishing runner-up in 2022 and T3 a season ago. We break down his chances in our Charles Schwab Challenge odds below.

Tony Finau Top 20 (+137)

Tony Finau was just a few shots back of the lead through three rounds at Valhalla, and if not for a flat Sunday round, he’d have finished much better than T18.

Either way, Finau gained nearly 10 shots on approach over his four rounds to lead the field in the category for the week. Over his last six months? He’s third in this field on approach and second from tee to green. 

That elite ball-striking has manifested itself into some other nice finishes, including a T12 at Harbour Town and a runner-up at the Houston Open. Combine that with the fact he has two Top 5s among five Top-25 finishes in eight career Colonial tries and you get the recipe for another strong showing.

Pick: Tony Finau Top 20 (+137 at bet365)

Lee Hodges Top 40 (+105)

While Finau led the Valhalla field in strokes gained approach, Lee Hodges was No. 2 after a +8.44 shots gained performance.

He was one shot better than Finau to finish T12 and that came a week after a T24 finish at Quail Hollow. He ranked 28th and 17th in those starts, respectively, in strokes gained putting, encouraging considering the flatstick was holding him back in some previous starts.

He’s finished T29 and T35 in his two Colonial starts and ranked fifth on approach a season ago. With the momentum from his play at Valhalla, I expect a similar performance this week.

Charles Schwab Challenge field and favorites

Another PGA Tour stop, another week of Scottie Scheffler pulling further away from the pack on the golf odds board, listed as short as +270. 

The World No. 1 didn't win last week (T8) but played great golf considering the circumstances of his arrest on Friday morning. He's back at Colonial for the fifth straight year and has finished inside the Top 3 in each of his last two tries. 

The only other golfer short than 15/1 is Collin Morikawa, with prices ranging between +1,200 and +1,400. The 2020 Charles Schwab runner-up was in the final group with Xander Schauffele at Valhalla but fell flat with the putter on Sunday. Either way, he finished T4 and has looked much improved since finishing third at the Masters in April.

Dallas native and 2016 champion Jordan Spieth sits third on the board with prices ranging between 18/1 and 20/1. He has a win, three runner-ups, and four more Top 10s in 11 career Colonial starts, but finished just T43 at the PGA last week. 

Next up is Max Homa, who's been up and down since a T3 finish at Augusta in April. He finished T35 last week with a 68-70-69-69 scorecard and comes to Colonial a year removed from a career-best T9 finish.

Tony Finau rounds out the Top 5 in the 30/1 range after lingering in contention at Valhalla and while he missed the cut here a season ago, he finished solo second in 2019 and posted a T4 in 2022.
