Artemi Panarin scored and added an assist during New York's four-goal second period to extend his season-opening points streak to 12 games as the host Rangers surged ahead before holding on for a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.

Panarin finished with his seventh multi-point game this season as the Rangers improved to 7-0-1 in their past eight games. Panarin's streak is the second longest to start a season in team history, trailing just the 14-game run from Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert in 1972-73.

Vincent Trocheck scored New York's first goal and netted his second tally during a second-period power play. Chris Kreider scored on a power-play tip-in to start the Rangers' outburst at 7:31 of the second, and Trocheck followed with a man-advantage tally 44 seconds later.

Panarin made it 4-0 at 11:21 of the second, and rookie Will Cuylle finished the binge at 14:10 with his third career goal for a 5-0 edge. Defenseman Erik Gustafsson collected two assists as the Rangers matched their season-high goal total.

New York goalie Igor Shesterkin was scratched for a second straight game due to soreness after practicing Monday. Jonathan Quick stepped in and made 25 saves.

Detroit's Ville Husso allowed five goals on 32 shots.

Michael Rasmussen and Klim Kostin scored 20 seconds apart in the third and Andrew Copp tallied later in the period for the Red Wings, who dropped to 2-4-1 in their past seven games. Ben Chiarot had two assists.

The Rangers took the first nine shots on a goal, including the goal that put them ahead 1:40 into the contest.

Gustafsson easily cruised through the defensive zone after retrieving a loose puck behind the New York net. He spotted Trocheck near the neutral zone and the center sped past Robby Fabbri and sent a shot from the lower right circle over Husso's right shoulder before Detroit defenseman Jake Walman could defend the play.

Kreider doubled the lead when Detroit defensemen Chiarot and Jeff Petry left him alone in front of the crease. Kreider capitalized on the miscue by easily deflecting Gustafsson's pass from the high slot over Husso.

Trocheck made it 3-0 by burying a one-timer from the low slot off a cross-ice pass from Mika Zibanejad following a giveaway in the right circle by Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider.

Panarin converted a one-timer from the right circle after Alexis Lafreniere stole the puck from Detroit defenseman Olli Maatta behind the net.

Cuylle tipped in a Zac Jones pass.
