without knowing where you are staying, for NYC, go here for awesome eats without breaking the bank:
John's of Bleecker - best pizza in the city. Don't worry about the line, wait in it for a table. you can watch the greenwich village cooks walk by while you wait.
Rosas Mexicana. Festive, upscale mexican. great guacamole. There are several around the city. I like the Union square and the Lincoln Center ones the best.
Arepas Caracas
Shake Shack
Noodle Bar (in west village)

For Philly.
Fried pickles.
I'd recommend googling "Diner's, Drive ins, and Dives" along with each city. Then read reviews.
I've been to numerous places that were on this show in many different city. Never once been disappointed. And most have a real local flavor.
Last month, I was in KC and had a tempura fried hamburger with wasabi cole slaw.

DO NOT GO TO RAYS PIZZA IN NYC. this is like saying "check out dominoes when you're in town." it's amazing how much I hear this and it blows my mind. they must have great advertising or name recognition or something. It is not good pizza, it is over priced, and it's no better than any chain.
Johns on Bleecker is the best in the city. Otherwise, pick any hole in the wall pizza place for a slice, so long as it is not a Rays.
