I'm just curious, If this had been a loud mouth Black player would he be getting the same pats on the back as this guy? and not being questioned further as to why he is really retiring? and trust me I'm not a fan of loud mouth Black players but this whole good kid image of this guy has bought him so much leverage on this. He should be getting called out hard for this, You quit playing NFL football because of safety fears?????? Really? Well then what's the point of doing anything in life, If you have a passion for something you should not worry about the ramifications or else you might as well just sit indoors with your family your whole life, You know live a guaranteed 75 years, Which is not what life is about despite what the degenerate chodes on covers.com will tell you.

Attaboy. When all else fails, play the race card.
Is football even legal in the United Kingdom? I figured you guys would have thrown out the contact sports with the guns.

In truth Belcher was a violent retard way before he ever played in the NFL. Research some stories about him in grade and high school
I've always just assumed anyone who plays middle linebacker or safety has to be a little effed up in the head anyways.
To everyone else calling this guy "pathetic", as a fan of the game I appreciate that he had the wherewithal and humbleness to admit he not only couldn't but didn't want to keep competing at the highest level and risk long term injury. Would you have rather seen him half-a $$ it for a few more seasons just to collect a paycheck? NO! Especially if the Niners are your favorite team......

Doc told me when I was in 11th grade that if I showed up with another concussion, I was done with contact sports for life. Played 3.5 more years while getting my bell rung and never went to doctor. Ended up quitting in college because I literally couldn't run without a week long headache to follow. In hindsight, it was the dumbest thing I've ever done.
Concussions are not a joke, and unless you're a victim, you don't know what you're talking about. They are debilitating, and literally change you as a person. The OP is ignorant and uninformed.
Good on Borland for taking responsibility for his health. He's a better man for it.

Im sure Borland has made enough $ to bet set for life so who gives two people if he retired. Must be nice to retire at 24 yrs old with a tonof $ in the bank. And just work a 9-5 and live a nice safe rich life. And still darn groupie person who remember his excellent stint in Frisco
He was actually set for life before entering the NFL. He is going to work for his father's company which makes crazy cash. He will make more working there than he would have in the NFL.

I completely understand why h retired and respect his decision. However, in my opinion the damage is already done.
He's already had multiple concussions, so if he was going to get CTE, he might not have done anything to stop it.
Several places I've read said that it was a money thing, and the money wasn't worth the risk. Honestly, I agree about that.
He's make less than a million a year. Take 40% off the top for Federal Taxes in the highest bracket, plus the highest state taxes in the country in California, and he's not going to have much left over. Who knows if he can even get past his rookie deal taking the beatings of a middle linebacker making 15 tackles a game.
He made 600k last season. I think the average football player lasts like 2.5 years. So 700k for , the possibility of going crazy in the future and killing his loved ones, grueling training camps, and taking an absolute beating on his body. I understand why he walked away.
It's just sucks cuz I'm a fan of the niners, and it looks like they went from title contender to last place in the NFC West within a week or so.

It's not only concussions. As newer information comes to light about the cumulative effects of subconcussive hits-you're gonna start seeing parents not allowing their kids to ever play pee wee football. A person who participates in a sport where your brain is getting "continuously" knocked around-is definitely risking big time problems after retirement-unlike the aches & pains of retired athletes from other pro sports. Borland simply decided it wasn't worth the risk.
