When I bet sports, I like to think I have an edge. Most of the time,
you play on situations, trends, trying to shine some light in the gray
area that distorts public perception vs. reality.
Try to do a
Google news search on the Wolverines. All you will find is a litany of
write-ups, chronicling the downfalls of the Rodriguez era. You will
find articles outlining misreported practice schedules, rumors of
Rodriguez's firing, and a season that has been turned entirely upside
down. There is nothing but negativity emanating from outside the walls
of Schembechler Hall.
People lose perspective really
fast--it's what a 4-0 start does to you. Did anyone expect the
Wolverines to win 10 games this season? Given their talent, their
limitations at QB and on defense, this was pegged to be no better than
an 8 win team.
And now? People are calling for RR head, as
the Wolverines have dropped a few games that they probably should have
won. Looking back to the 3rd quarter goal line stand of the Illinois
game, this team has yet to recover. And now? After collapsing in
Champagne, collapsing at home against Purdue, and folding in the 2nd
half in Wisconsin, this team has heard the critics for the last month.
They've heard it about their coach. They've heard it about their
defensive play. They've heard it about their youth and inexperience.
This is a team that is quite obviously playing to salvage their
season--both literally and figuratively. This team has missed MANY
opportunities to exceed expectations and have failed repeatedly. How
often in sports do you get one, last chance to atone for EVERYTHING?
Beating Ohio St would not only salvage the Wolverines' season, it would
send them to a bowl game, a reward that this team undoubtedly felt it
was entitled to after its 4-0 start. The opportunity to atone for a
season's worth of mistakes rarely comes in just one game.
Ohio
St., on the other hand, strolls into this game having just locked up a
Rose Bowl berth last week. And it didn't come easily. They had to go
to overtime, at home, to dispose of a team starting a freshman QB. And
of course, this came after the Buckeye's impressive performance at Penn
St. Yeah it's OSU-Michigan, but what does that mean to Ohio St.
anymore? They have owned this rivalry, having won 7 of the last 8!
Ohio St's ambitions stretch FAR, FAR beyond beating Michigan. They're
concerned with winning national championships.
Now, you're
telling me you want to stroll into Ann Arbor to face a team with a
season's worth of pent-up angers, pent-up frustrations, with a
Sophomore QB who is almost assuredly satisfied with his play of the
last two weeks? And on top of that lay almost two touchdowns?

Couldn't agree with you more... Well said.. I liked your analysis and analogies.
Michigan has a lot to play for and despite the lackluster performances of late your assessment put this game into perspective for both squads.
However I don't feel Ohio State will come into Michigan and take them lightly by any means. I think all season long Ohio State has been an enigma.
It seems like whenever we expect them to flex their muscle they fold... Like Iowa last week, a team they should have man handled considering they started a freshman QB and were playing on their home field. Ohio State is clearly the cream of the crop in the Big 10 but what does that mean really...
The only other team worth a damn in this conference is Wisco and Wisco should've beaten Ohio State but somehow manages to lose by 18... that's what I mean about Ohio State and the big ten a very strange league...
I think Ohio State's aura has completely been erased no respectable school from a respectable confrence fears playing OSU unless of course your from the big ten... No one has been able to knock them off of their thrown...
So while yeah Michigan should be competitive... I think this all comes down to Ohio State and they're very capable of dismantling Michigan or laying an egg... I don't think Ohio State is consistent or that good, fortunatley they play in the Big 10...
You can't tell me LSU or Ole Miss don't give them a run for their money,,, Navy did for christ sake...

You do realize that 80% of the team grew up in Ohio, and it doens't matter if Michigan was winless, they will be pumped for this game.
The Rose Bowl is over a month away, you really think Ohio State is going to coast in the biggest rivalry in sports because they have a Rose Bowl victory locked up?
Not saying Michigan won't cover the 12, but to think Ohio State is in letdown mode is crazy IMO...best of luck with your wager.

I'm not calling for a letdown at all. I don't think I say that anywhere. I'm just pointing out that this has been nothing but a rivalry the last decade. Ohio St. has owned. There's a difference between wanting to win badly--while at the same time knowing in the back of your mind that you're going to win--and wanting to win and not having a clue if your efforts will be enough. When you don't know if your efforts will be enough, you bring more. When you know you're supposed to win/going to win, you're not digging deeper for anything.

I guess to me the real question is will OHIO ST. need to dig that deep? Michigan is the kind of team that implodes and Ohio State is good enough to capitalize on those mistakes...
If Ohio State and Michigan both play their best games I believe Michigan hangs around cause in my heart of hearts I don't believe Ohio State is 12 points better than any respectable team...
But I'm not sure if Michigan is respectable, hence the quagmire...

What do you really think OSU's best entails playing on the road?
@ Indiana: 33-14 W @ Purdue: 18-26 L @ Penn St: 24-7 W
The win at PSU was undoubtedly impressive, but that's the second time the mighty Nitany Lions have lost at home this season.
Pryor's performance in this contests: @ Indiana: 16-27, 159 yards, 3td's 1int @ Purdue: 17-31, 221 yards, 1td 2int's @ Penn St: 8-17, 125 yards, 2td
Michigan's secondary is by far the biggest weakness on this defense. By far. Now, ask yourself: Is Pryor capable of exploiting this glaring weakness? As a passer, Pryor is probably one of the worst QBs this Michigan secondary has faced this season.

What??? What did you say? How many times? How many times do you need to see The Vest's game management. No three touchdowns. Stop it.
You pick any ranked team ahead your bums. Any one of them. And they will rake that sorry ass team and coach up and down the field. 3 touchdowns. Did you not watch the end of the Iowa game?????????? It was laughable. The people in that stadium were embarrased to be Ohio State fans. They boo'd him and the team won.
Hey, you want to be this Coach's puppy. Ive got no problem. But dont pound your chest on here when your team is at the top of the worst conference in football.

Well since you are going out of your way to be an asshole let me do the same.
How about before you open your fucking mouth you read previous threads where I talk about my disappointment in Jim Tressel this year. But since you are a lazy fuck you make statements which you have no idea about.
You try to call me out for "pounding my chest" when in actuality all you're trying to be is a tough little fuck trying to pound your own chest...
...most likely because OSU burned you all season by posting their 8-3 record ats...
So why don't you not try and be a total asshole, to someone you don't know, and shut your fucking mouth.

Michigan could very well cover this game, but they will not win the game. Tressel does have Mich's #, that is for sure. There will be no letdown. Stuff like that happened when John Cooper was around but not anymore. Say what you want about OSU but they are very close to being unbeaten this year, some missed opportunities and a late TD by USC, and sleepwalking vs Purdue for a few quarters. In fact, OSU would smoke many of the top 25 teams even with their subpar QB play. That shows you how strong the rest of the team is.
Bama, Flor, TCU are great teams, but we have seen that OSU can play w/ teams like Texas and USC . Guys that have said teams w/ "speed" would kill OSU have been broke dicks after saying Texas is gonna kill'em, USC is gonna kill'em, penn st is gonna kill'em...

I'm not betting this game, but if you're backing Michigan based on the whole "game means everything" approach, keep in mind, their last 4 games have pretty much "meant everything" with them trying to clinch a bowl game after last years debacle. In those four games, they've given up an average of close to 40 ppg. If you bet Michigan, I would advise not to watch it, because that secondary will frustrate the living hell out of you!!! Good luck ya'll!!!!

Yes and No, first off this version of USC is Pete Carroll's worst by far.
I've never been a big fan of Texas or Mack Brown... Texas is a really good team and I'll give Ohio State their due for beating them last season.
Penn State another Big 10 disappointment... There's no question that the Big 10 is awful, that's a fact.
I don't think you can put Penn St or USC in the same league as Bama or UF right now, just my opinion...
Ohio State could be so much better than what they've showed this season... u can't lose to Purdue... Notice we don't see Bama or UF slip up in a much tougher conference against competition far greater than Purdue...
Ohio State is second tier team, plain and simple, they're no longer an elite squad in the country... they're 1 notch below the best...

Its going to be ok, really it will. You are a Buckeye Fan, you are frustrated, I know. The worst time of year for you is the bowl season. The anxiety you must feel when your team is in a national spotlight. And the beatdown that will soon come at kickoff. It will all soon be over, the Vest will do his postgame speech..."I just need to get our boys better prepared next time" and at the end of the day...this program has turned into a sad and sorry state when facing any team that has talent.
Ask yourself a simple question...any Buckeye fan that was approached and asked..."if you could swapout the Vest for a Gruden or a Jim Harbaugh or a Brian Kelly as your coach for 2010 would you want to make that change?" They would all jump at that in a heartbeat.
Old, crusty, predictable is your coach, your hero, The Vest.

This is easy pick. It is a rivalry game with OSU going on the road after securing the B10 title and the Rose Bowl for the first time in 10+ years.
There is naturally going to be a let down. Sort of reminds me of the 2001-02 year in Tressel's 1st year. UM was playing well and favored by 8 and OSU just came in and stomped them.
this is a UM play late to get the best number or no play.
Though the OVER is my recommendation since UM hasn't held a BCS team under 30 points at home this season and has only held one Big 10 team under 30 at home under Rich Rod - Northwestern last year.
This is easy pick. It is a rivalry game with OSU going on the road after securing the B10 title and the Rose Bowl for the first time in 10+ years.

If you think michigan gives up 30 and this game is still gonna be close you are crazy. Michigans o hasn't been doing anything either. They come out and score a td on the first drive and don't do shit after that. For all the well deserved heat the d has taken the offense deserves much of the blame for all the 3 and outs. When you start 2 walk ons on your defense you aren't going to stop anyone, and this is coming from a michigan fan. The wolverines get smoked by at least 17.

True, I don't see Michigan scoring very much either, the Buckeyes D has been great all year, I think only Purdue, Iowa, and Navy scored over 20 points on them this year

1. navy is a very good football team
2.dobbs is #1 in the country rushing tds
3. bucks were up 30-14 with 3mins left.....2 late scores by navy made it close
4. if you think tressel wont get these boys up then you frankly dont know shit about jim tressell, his father , or how deep his buckeye roots go

Ask yourself a simple question...any Buckeye fan that was approached and asked..."if you could swapout the Vest for a Gruden or a Jim Harbaugh or a Brian Kelly as your coach for 2010 would you want to make that change?" They would all jump at that in a heartbeat.
As a Michigan fan, I am all for any one of those guys taking over in Columbus. I despise both Tressel and Motta... mostly because they win... a lot.
I'll give you both the coaches we stole from the Mountaineers and an autographed picture of Bo Schembechler when he worked for Woody Hayes for either of the Fuckeye coaches.
Whoops... must have hit the wrong key there... I guess my Blue is showing...

Did I say I was going to take UM. I said the right side given the situation is to play UM or not play at all.
But the best bet is the over.
If I was to bet this game it would be something like a small play on UM and a big play on the over.

Let's look at the last 4 games. Penn St started the losing streak for them, but it wasn't as bad as 35-10 might indicate. Michigan had 4 turnovers to Penn St's none.
They go to Illinois and get waxed 38-13, but again very mis-leading. Mich was up 13-7 at half, but two 70+ runs did them in, along with 3 turnovers compared to none for Illinois.
Come home for Purdue, take a 30-17 lead before falling apart late in the 3rd quarter.
Obviously after that collapse, and with Ohio St on deck, Wiscy was an awful spot. They still managed to take a 17-14 lead before collapsing AGAIN in the second half.
So, turnovers and 2nd half collapses have done them in. If they keep it close in the 2nd half this time, I think they dig down enough to quite possibly pull out the outright win. It is a great spot, and they have shown they have the talent.

That's what separates the good teams from the bad. The ability to not fall apart. If they didn't fall apart they would have a great record, just like a lot of other teams that have "what ifs."
If they fell apart against those other teams, do you think they will honestly stay in this game?

As tsw outlined, Michigan's recent losses are extremely misleading, littered with 2nd half collapses.
Ask yourself the likelihood they continue trending along this path against a QB that has proven he's not capable of making their porous secondary pay and a coach obsessed with playing it as conservatively as possible.
