Recap
Backup netminder Devan Dubnyk turned aside 40 shots and Ryan Smyth had three assists as the Edmonton Oilers continued to roll, silencing the host Colorado Avalanche 3-1 Friday night for their fourth win in a row.
Dubnyk was sensational in relief of Nikolai Khabibulin, recording his most saves since April 2 as the Oilers continued their stunning start to the campaign.
A year after allowing the most goals in the NHL, Edmonton has surrendered just 16 in its first 10 games this season.
After a scoreless opening period, the Oilers were outplayed to open the second but still struck first at 7:55. Cam Barker took a Sam Gagner pass to his backhand and lifted a shot into the top of the net with Colorado rookie Gabriel Landeskog in the penalty box for goaltender interference.
Edmonton extended the lead with 5:40 remaining in the second, as Andy Sutton redirected Lennart Petrell's initial shot from just inside the blue line. The assist was Petrell's first career NHL point.
Ryan O'Reilly's power-play goal at 5:42 of the third period ended Dubnyk's shutout bid. Following a scramble in front of the net, Matt Duchene's centering pass skipped to O'Reilly, who made no mistake with Dubnyk out of position at the right edge of the crease.
It took the Oilers just 27 seconds to restore the two-goal edge as Shawn Horcoff scored from a bad angle following a defensive breakdown in the Avalanche zone.
