Rutgers 70, South Florida 67:
Wally Judge scored 14 points and the Scarlet Knights survived a last-second 3-point
attempt by the Bulls to earn a home Big East home victory.
With his team down by three points, South Florida's Martino
Block had a shot at tying the game, but his 3-point attempt was off
the mark with seven seconds left and Rutgers rebounded to run out the
clock.
A close game throughout saw
Rutgers (12-4, 3-2 Big East) take an eight point lead with 9:04 to
play on a Myles Mack 3-pointer, but South Florida (9-7, 0-4) went on
a quick 8-2 run to pull within two with 7:33 to go. The Scarlet
Knights responded, with Dane Miller scoring five points in a 9-4 run
that pushed the lead back to seven.
The Bulls weren't done though,
pulling within three on Anthony Collins' jumper with 1:30 to play.
Each team committed a turnover before Jerome Seagears missed a
3-pointer with 18 seconds left, giving South Florida its last shot at tying the
game.
Eli Carter and Mack each finished
with 13 points while Seagears tallied five points,
six rebounds and seven assists for the Scarlet Knights. Jawanza Poland paced the Bulls with
17 points, hitting 7 of 10 from the field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: South Florida fell
despite shooting 52 percent from the field. … Rutgers won the
rebound battle, 26-22. … South Florida returns home for its next
contest, hosting Georgetown on Saturday. Rutgers heads on the road to
face Notre Dame on Saturday.
