Recap

Ryan Hanigan belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and the visiting Cincinnati Reds held on for a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday afternoon.

Hanigan’s homer was his third of the season and first since April 3, when he had two against Milwaukee. Joey Votto and Scott Rolen led off the fourth with singles, setting up Hanigan’s two-out blast. Votto and Hanigan each had two hits for the Reds, who won two of three in the series.

Rays designated hitter Johnny Damon singled in the sixth for his 2,654th career hit, tying Ted Williams for 71st on the all-time list. B.J. Upton hit his team-leading 12th home run in the seventh for the Rays.

Evan Longoria’s two-run double in the sixth brought the Rays within 3-2, but Reds starter and winner Edinson Volquez (5-3) got Matt Joyce to line into a double play to end the threat. Volquez had allowed one hit the first five innings.

Rays starter James Shields (8-5) had his franchise-record streak of three straight complete-game wins snapped. Shields gave up four runs in seven innings, striking out 10.

Fred Lewis extended the lead to 4-2 with a two-out, RBI single in the seventh.
