Canker sores are small shallow ulcers that appear in the mouth and often make eating and talking uncomfortable. There are two types of canker sores:
The exact cause of most canker sores is unknown. Stress or tissue injury is thought to be the cause of simple canker sores. Certain foods - including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (such as lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes, and strawberries) - can trigger a canker sore or make the problem worse. Sometimes a sharp tooth surface or dental appliance, such as braces or ill-fitting dentures, might also trigger canker sores.
Some cases of complex canker sores are caused by an underlying health condition, such as an impaired immune system; nutritional problems, such as vitamin B-12, zinc, Celiac disease and Crohn's disease.
No, although cold sores and canker sores are often confused for each other, they are not the same. Cold sores, also called a fever blister or herpes simplex type 1, are groups of painful, fluid-filled blisters. Unlike canker sores, cold sores are caused by a virus and are extremely contagious. Also, cold sores typically appear outside the mouth - usually, under the nose, around the lips, or under the chin while canker sores occur inside the mouth.

In severe canker sore attacks, you may also experience:
Pain from a canker sore generally lessens in a few days and the sores usually heal without treatment in about a week or two.
If sores are large, painful, or persistent, your dentist may prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse, a corticosteroid ointment, or a prescription or nonprescription solution to reduce the pain and irritation.
Although there is no cure for canker sores and they often reoccur, you may be able to reduce their frequency by:

Manram, I used to get them frequently too (every few weeks, two or three at a time) I changed my diet (less spicy/acidic foods), cut down on the coffee and cola. It slowed them down quite a bit to the point I only get them maybe once every couple of months.
I think diet is huge, but you may have to try different things to see.
Good luck...I use a product called OraGel Mouth Aid - Canker Sores...numbs them for a few hours, but you have to reapply, especially if they're on your tongue.

Impossible haha. My favorite things to eat are spicy and hot and if their not i make them that way and my favorite thing to drink is orange juice. I guess im stuck with them forever. I will try out that oragel stuff. Worst thing that ever happend to me with these things. My wife went out to the store grocery shopping. I told her to check out some stuff for them and pick it up for me. She brought home these things that you put over top of them to prevent rubbing. Thought it was weird but would try anything cause it was in a terrible spot. I put it on for a little bit but couldnt handle the feeling anymore of it in my mouth so i went to take it off AND IT WAS STUCK TO THE CANKER SORE AND THE SKIN AROUND IT. Ended up ripping everything right off skin and all.

Oh fuck man, I've used that stuff tooo...brutal. And there is another one that is supposed to create a protective layer over it, same thing, it gets stuck to the inside of the canker sore and when it gets loose on the skin, it pulls. PURE PAIN!...
Have you tried using an antacid before you eat your spicy foods or orange juice. Could be that your stomach is creating too much acid that's manifesting in the canker sores. I've used Gavascon as a preventive measure if I know I'm going to be having wings, or any sort of spicy food.

2-3 times a month
Wow man I get one once or twice a year and they are annoying as hell. I swish around a little hydrogen peroxide but I really dont think it does much.

Me i can deal with them whatever they blow but now i feel worse. My 2 year old daughter the past couple of days has been saying her mouth hurts and we had no idea why. Last night my wife was helping her brush her teeth and bam a monster on the bottom of her lip that rubs up against her gums. Was checking some stuff on toddlers getting them and it said its very rare you get them before 10 and they seem to very hereditary. Poor thing better get used to them i guess.

I see this everywhere. I have always thought everything these idiots say cause them was not true before and now that my daughter has one i think it even more. She does not eat spicy food, she does not get stressed, she doesnt use mouthwash, she uses little kid toothpaste. No braces, no acidic food. I can go on and on. I think its something that just pops up and some are unfortunate and get them alot more.
