The Chicago Sky and rookie Angel Reese played about as well as a visiting young team can play on opening night, but a final four-minute push by the Dallas Wings thwarted Chicago’s upset chances, with the Sky falling 87-79.
Reese and the Sky are the WNBA odds underdog again tonight, but our WNBA picks expect Reese to have another strong showing when they face the Wings again on Saturday, May 18.

My analysis
The Chicago Sky played a terrific basketball game for 36.5 minutes, but the Dallas Wings found another gear and outscored Chicago 16-4 over the final four minutes to pull out an 87-79 home victory.
The two franchises battled for much of their Wednesday night tilt, but Chicago was outhustled on the boards, missed a couple of loose balls they should have secured, and lost a game they probably should have won.
Losing a game like that had to sting a bit, but this is a young, rebuilding Chicago side, and one of the young Sky players who shone brightly but could have played better was rookie forward Angel Reese.
The seventh overall pick of the 2024 draft had a nice WNBA debut, scoring 12 points with eight boards and a dime across 26 minutes of play. She struggled from the charity stripe (2-8) with a pair of turnovers and missed some box-out opportunities late in the game that she certainly learned from.
Reese is a proven rebounder and scorer. Although Natasha Howard and Teaire McCowan sometimes outworked her, she finished with a decent +/- (- 7) and should have gained some additional confidence playing against the taller and aggressive Dallas women.
Reese proved Wednesday night that she can play with the big girls and will again tonight. She knows she needs to be the primary rebounder with fellow rookie Kamilla Cardoso on the shelf, and I expect her to box out better late and continue getting to the charity stripe. She’ll continue getting to the line but will make more free throws, and that should push her scoring combo prop Over the number.

While I expect Reese to get hers, Dallas will also cover the number. Dallas came out flat in its season opener, but they know how to close games, are better from the charity stripe, and the home crowd will lift the Wings past the pesky Sky.
The nerves should be gone, and the ladies will let it fly tonight. They nearly reached the bookmakers' number on opening night, and that’s with Chicago shooting 39% from the field and 29% from the charity stripe. These teams play fast, will be more comfortable than they were in their season opener, and should clear the bookmakers' total.
