There's one final stop on the schedule before the golf universe shifts its focus to the Masters... and that's the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio.

It's largely a second-tier field as most top guys are looking to rest and prep on their own time, but with that said, there's still a ton of intrigue as guys like Rickie Fowler — currently not in the Masters field — can sneak into Augusta at the 11th hour with a win this week.

We break down his chances and more in our Valero Texas Open betting preview below, including outright odds, free golf picks, and more.

Valero Texas Open picks and predictions

Rickie Fowler Top 20 (+115 at bet365)

We’re staring down the barrel of a third straight Rickie Fowler-less Masters unless he can find a way to come out on top this week and while backing him to win feels a little lofty, he’s played well enough this year to at least give himself a chance.

That good play has come thanks in large part to some really good iron play: he ranks 10th in strokes gained approach and has gained strokes in every start this season. The results? Seven Top-20 finishes in 11 starts, including five in his last six starts if you count the Dell Technologies Match Play as a T17.

It’s also worth noting that five of those six most recent starts were against elevated fields. This week’s field is far from that and it’ll take much less from Rickie to stay in the mix come Sunday afternoon should he not have his best stuff.

Si Woo Kim to finish 25th or better (-120 at bet365)

Si Woo Kim has been relatively steady since winning the Sony Open back in January. He’s missed just one cut in 2023 and his season-long numbers are better than you might think, ranking inside the Top 25 in strokes gained tee-to-green, strokes gained approach, scoring average, and bogey avoidance.

The weaker parts of his game are his putting and scrambling, but that hasn’t been the case for him at TPC San Antonio considering he’s gained strokes in both of those areas in each of his last four Texas Open tries – helping him produce solid results along the way.

He’s gone T23 or better in four of his last five starts here which includes a fourth-place finish in 2019 and a T13 a year ago. Looking at his recent form, Kim has finished inside this 25th or better threshold in five of eight starts this year with one of the others being a T27 at THE PLAYERS. He’s also gained strokes putting in six of those eight starts.

Between the course history, some decent form, and the fact he’s been able to hide his weaknesses here in Texas, I’m expecting another quality showing from him this week.

Valero Texas Open field and favorites

Lining the field at TPC San Antonio is Tyrrell Hatton at +1,300 but as I mentioned at the onset, all eyes will be on Rickie Fowler (+1,800) this week as he chases the final qualifying spot for the Masters.

Corey Conners is also among the favorites this week at 24/1 and for good reason: his lone PGA Tour victory came here at the Valero Texas Open back in 2019. Defending champion J.J. Spaun is also in the field at 34/1 after making it to the Round of 16 at the Dell Technologies Match Play last week.

Another notable in this week's field is Hideki Matsuyama, who's available at 25/1. Despite a pretty quiet season thus far, the 2021 Masters winner did finish fifth at THE PLAYERS three weeks ago.
