Diamondbacks vs Giants Prediction, Picks, and Odds for Tonight’s MLB Game

There are 15 games on a packed MLB slate this Friday, wrapping up with a showdown between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants.

This is the second contest in a four-game set at Oracle Park, with San Francisco blanking Arizona 5-0 last night. MLB odds have the Giants installed as -130 home favorites for this NL West clash.

My analysis

Early money has come in on the Under in this matchup, and if this pitching duel was taking place last year, that would be a no-brainer for me. 

The San Francisco Giants will send last year's NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell to the hill, while the Arizona Diamondbacks counter with Jordan Montgomery, who is coming off a career-best season in Texas.

However, both veteran southpaws missed spring training and don't look like they've settled in with their new clubs.

Snell didn't sign with the Giants until March 18, and he allowed three runs in as many innings in his season debut before getting pumped for seven runs in four innings against the Rays in his last outing. Meanwhile, the D-Backs didn't ink Montgomery to a deal until three weeks ago, and he surrendered seven runs in 3 2/3 innings in his final tune-up start at Triple-A Reno last week. 

Both teams are also hitting much better against southpaws than last year. Last season, the D-Backs were 21st in the majors in OPS (.711) against lefties, but this year rank second with an OPS of .813. 

In 2023, the Giants were 28th in the majors in OPS (.683) versus southpaws, but are 13th (.720) to begin 2024 while ranking fourth in hard-hit rate.

Snell is coming off a dynamite season where he pitched to a 2.25 ERA and fanned 234 batters in 180 innings. While he's still trying to shake off the offseason rust, the two-time Cy Young winner has been making batters miss with nine strikeouts through seven innings. The Giants lefty has also racked up at least seven strikeouts in 10 of his final 11 starts last year. 

At their best, Snell is a tad sharper and more consistent than Montgomery, and he's a bit further ahead of the D-Backs starter when it comes to being game-ready. 

San Francisco also has a recent history of beating the D-Backs at home, going 7-2 in the last nine meetings between these NL West foes at Oracle Park. That's enough for me to also back the home side in this SGP.

• Montgomery had a 3.20 ERA with a 3.98 xERA in 32 starts last year. In two appearances against the Giants, the lefty allowed four runs (three earned) throughout 12 1/3 innings.
