2025 Cy Young Odds: Hello Yamamoto

Yoshinobu Yamamoto should maybe be the sole betting favorite in the NL, thanks to his 0.90 ERA to start the season. But Paul Skenes still has a lot going for him and books aren't ready to offer him at a discount just yet.

We have a bit of a logjam in our MLB Cy Young odds races.

Paul Skenes and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are in a virtual tie atop the MLB odds to win the NL Cy Young, but four others are +1800 or shorter. Meanwhile, Jacob deGrom is starting to look like he might be in the mix in the AL.

Let's take a look at the Cy Young odds board as the contenders are starting to take shape.

AL Cy Young odds analysis

Not much has changed here as Tarik Skubal has maintained a modest edge over Garrett Crochet.

With the frontrunners established and the secondary contenders nipping at their heels, Jacob deGrom is an interesting middle-ground option and I can't see his +1600 odds lasting. Now, which direction it moves is up for debate.

While he hasn't been his pre-injury dominant self, deGrom is finding a groove. Since allowing seven earned runs across 9 2/3 innings in two early April starts, the veteran right-hander has surrendered four total runs in 23 1/3 innings over his ensuing four outings. The strikeouts aren't fully back (just 23 in that span), but he could be easing his foot off the gas a bit. And that number is brought down a little due to recording just three punchouts in his most recent appearance.

One of them was pretty special, though.

Avoiding further injury is the primary objective, but if he feels good and loose by July, he might turn up the heat a bit down the stretch. If you're planning on buying in, now might be the time.

NL Cy Young analysis

Paul Skenes had allowed one home run over his first six starts (47 2/3 innings) before surrendering three to the Chicago Cubs in his most recent start. He recorded a season-low two strikeouts while walking a season-high four batters. It's fair to say this is likely an anomaly, but any bad start will put a dent in your odds when the race is so close.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto is 4-2 with a 0.90 ERA (!), a 0.93 WHIP, and 49 strikeouts in 40 innings this season. The fact that he can have two losses on his register seems downright laughable, and points yet again to the fallacy of a pitcher's win-loss record.

He's neck and neck with Skenes and has even drawn even with him at FanDuel. Yamamoto's most recent effort saw him twirl six shutout innings where he allowed just one hit against the Atlanta Braves.

If Logan Webb made all of his starts at Oracle Park, he might win this in a walk. The San Francisco Giants right-hander is a very good pitcher almost everywhere, but he's nearly perfect at home. He's made only three starts in front of Giants fans this season, but he's allowed one run in 20 1/3 innings, pitching into the seventh all three times.

It will be tricky for him to compete, but Yamamoto can't sustain a 0.90 ERA and Skenes has shown some chinks in the armor. Webb was +3000 just a few weeks ago.
