Cardinals vs Brewers Prediction, Picks, and Odds for Tonight’s MLB Game

Robert Gasser's pitching his first big-league game for the Brewers, and he couldn't be getting served up much softer opposition than the Cardinals, so our MLB picks think he can get the job done.

The St. Louis Cardinals will try to break a five-game losing streak as they visit the Milwaukee Brewers for the second game of a four-game series at American Family Field.

The Brewers (22-15) come into tonight’s game as a favorite in the MLB odds over the Cardinals (15-22), who have fallen to last place in the NL Central.

Tonight’s game will see Milwaukee pitching prospect Robert Gasser's debut as he gets the start against St. Louis. We’ll break down what we can expect from him in our free Cardinals vs. Brewers predictions and MLB picks for May 10.

My analysis

Robert Gasser came into the 2024 season as one of the Top 100 prospects in baseball, according to Baseball America, and the Brewers have high expectations for the 24-year-old lefty. While he struggled in three minor league starts this year, he was solid for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds in 2023, going 9-1 with a 3.79 ERA in 26 outings.

Gasser throws his fastball in the low-to-mid 90s, and has a slider that he uses to generate strikeouts. While few expect him to be an ace at the major league level, Gasser’s solid control and good strikeout numbers suggest he’ll find MLB success, and the Brewers are hoping he can make an impact in their rotation immediately.

Milwaukee is easing Gasser’s transition to the big leagues by putting him up against perhaps the weakest lineup in the National League tonight. St. Louis is averaging a paltry 3.43 runs per game, ahead of only the lowly Chicago White Sox at the bottom of the majors. The Cardinals are hitting just .217 with a .634 OPS on the year, and have scored three runs or less in seven of their last 10 games.

Worse still for the Cardinals is the fact that they haven’t hit lefties at all this year. St. Louis has put up a .184 batting average and a .571 OPS against southpaws in 2024. In nine games against lefthanded starters, the Cardinals have only totaled 31 runs. Throw in the normal growing pains for hitters trying to figure out a pitcher they’ve never seen before, and this looks like it’ll be another poor night for the St. Louis lineup.

The Cardinals can feel good about sending Lance Lynn to the mound, as he’s been one of the few bright spots for the team this year. But the 36-year-old veteran has struggled with his control and no longer has shutdown stuff, pitching to a 4.56 FIP this year. It’s doubtful that he’ll be able to contain a Brewers offense that is putting up a robust 4.97 runs per game on the season.

The Cardinals are flailing right now, and tonight’s game offers little hope of things changing for St. Louis. I’m taking the Brewers to snag a win in Gasser’s MLB debut.

Cardinals vs Brewers same-game parlay (SGP)

Brewers moneyline

Under 8.5

First inning Under 0.5 runs

Taking my Brewers pick into account, we’ll then add in a bet on the Under at 8.5 runs. Lynn gives the Cardinals a solid starter tonight, which should keep the score under control while St. Louis struggles (as usual) against Gasser.

On that note, I’m also throwing in a bet on no runs being scored in the first inning, as I expect both offenses to get off to slow starts tonight.
