    NJ sports betting updates

New Jersey’s path to legalized sports betting was paved nearly a decade ago by then-Governor Chris Christie. It became the first state to legalize online sports betting in the United States after SCOTUS overturned PASPA. The ruling ended a nearly decade-long legal battle between the state and the five largest U.S. sports leagues and ushered in a new age of online sports betting.

This timeline illustrates NJ sports betting origins and the current state of affairs.

May 2, 2025: Fanatics Casino launched in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, where it's available on iOS and Android.

April 20, 2025: The battle between New Jersey and prediction market startup Kalshi rages on, with the state filing a brief in opposition to the company’s recent motion for a preliminary injunction.

April 17, 2025: New Jersey's handle and revenue decreases during March Madness, which failed to generate as much sports betting interest as in previous years.

April 10, 2025: Online casino Hard Rock Bet expanded its Garden State mobile offerings with the launch of Take-Off!, a crash-style casino game IGT PlayDigital developed.

Who can partake in NJ sports betting?

NJ sports betting is leading the way with points of access, as sportsbooks and sports lounges are inside Atlantic City casinos and also at racetracks at the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park. If you cannot get to Atlantic City, anyone  — resident or not — 21 or older can place online sports bets using a computer, mobile phone, or tablet. Here's a brief overview of what you need to know before you start betting:

      21plus Legal age

The legal age for New Jersey sports betting is 21, whether a player is inside of a casino or wagering on a NJ sports betting site.

      21plus Mobile betting

Legal online NJ sports betting can take place on a computer, mobile phone, or tablet. The New Jersey Division Of Gaming Enforcement regulates all online and casino gambling.

As an added layer of security, NJ sports betting sites also adopt two-factor authentication, meaning customers will have to confirm their accounts via SMS or an authenticator app.

      globe Within state borders

All NJ online sports betting must take place within state lines. While you do not have to be a resident of the state to place a wager, you must be physically located within New Jersey. Additionally, players will not be allowed to wager with NJ sportsbooks if they use virtual private networks to mask their locations.

      bank Retail sportsbooks

There are 13 retail sportsbooks and sports lounges in New Jersey. The majority of retail sportsbooks are located within the nine Atlantic City casinos. There are three sports lounges situated at horse racetracks throughout the state. The retail sportsbooks take wagers in-person and via kiosk.

      percent Taxable winnings

Sports bet winnings are considered income by the federal government. However, winnings can be offset by losses. Players are required to pay the 24% tax rate if they win more than $600 in a year. Additionally, New Jersey assesses a 3% state tax on all income.

The pros and cons of NJ sports betting

The competition created by rival NJ sports betting sites has been a significant boon for New Jersey's recreational sports bettors. Players can use this to their advantage by choosing sportsbooks that offer the best promotions and odds.

Most bettors will be satisfied with the options, but high rollers and sharp bettors might feel different. NJ sportsbooks have been known to limit or remove some sharper high rollers that might try to make a living betting on sports.

      Odds explained

American odds are the default option for NJ sportsbooks. Favorites have negative/minus (-) odds, and players will have to lay more to win less money. For example, a $150 wager on -100 odds will return $150 plus the original bet. Underdogs are not expected to win and have positive/plus (+) odds. These bets will have better returns. For example, a $100 wager on +150 odds will return $150 plus the original bet.

The default odds format for futures bets and props is moneyline odds, instead of fractions or decimal points. Many NJ sportsbook apps will allow players to change how the odds are displayed in order to make the information easier to understand. Decimal odds may be easier for players to comprehend quickly, but if you're struggling with odds conversions use our odds converter to easily adjust from American to decimal or fractions.

In 2021, New Jersey became the first state to clear the $10 billion mark in yearly sports betting handle, taking in a total of $10.93 billion with $815.7 million in sports betting revenue. Even more impressive, from Sep. 2023 to April 2024, there were eight straight months with a handle of more than $1 billion in the online sports betting market.

In January 2024, New Jersey posted $1.96 billion in sports betting handle, an all-time single-month record. The feat was even more impressive, with New York launching legal online sports betting sites that same month. Unprecedented NJ sports betting revenue is being experienced, and the year-over-year monthly handle continues to grow.

      NJ sports betting law

New Jersey lawmakers' efforts to legalize sports betting pre-date the 2018 fall of PASPA. In 2012, then-Governor Chris Christie signed legislation permitting sports betting after voters approved a referendum in 2011. After years of rebuking, legal NJ sports betting finally arrived in 2018.

Here are some highlights of the current state of sports betting in New Jersey:

      • The NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement regulates all online and land-based sports wagering in New Jersey.

      • You must be 21 or older to bet on sports in NJ.

      • There is no cap on the number of casinos permitted to offer sports betting, but casinos are limited to three online skins each.

      • Land-based sportsbooks are taxed 9.75% of gross gaming revenue, while online operators must pay a 14.25% tax.

      • Betting on NJ college teams or college games in New Jersey is prohibited.

      • esports wagering is legal, provided the majority of participants are 18 or older.

      Other types of gambling

New Jersey is home to traditional casino gambling at real money online casinos and also in person at casinos in Atlantic City. In addition to sports betting, both types of NJ casinos offer a wide range of games, including blackjack, roulette, video poker, and slot machines.

      casino Casino

Atlantic City casinos are full-service and offer all of the traditional casino games visitors expect. Table games players will find different variations of blackjack along with roulette and craps. The casinos also offer carnival games like Three Card Poker and Mississippi Stud Poker.

Additionally, New Jersey casinos feature high-limit rooms and dedicated areas for some Asian casino favorites. Machine game players will find a variety of video poker, slot machines, and electronic table games. Casinos in New Jersey are frequently testing new table and machine games to see if there’s something new that visitors will enjoy.

There are currently 29 NJ online casinos operating in the state, some of which offer a NJ online casino no-deposit bonus.

      poker Poker

NJ poker players can play poker both online and inside of some Atlantic City casinos. Live poker rooms are found at the following casinos: Borgata, Harrah’s, Bally’s, Golden Nugget, and Tropicana.

Online poker players have even more variety: NJ online poker is available from 888 Poker, Bet MGM, Borgata Poker, Pala Poker, Party Poker, Poker Stars, and WSOP.com.

      Horse and jockey Horse racing

New Jersey is home to three horse racetracks. Players can watch and wager on the horse racing at Freehold, Meadowlands, and Monmouth Park racetracks.

Borgata is the only Atlantic City casino that offers pari-mutuel horse race betting. There are numerous off-track betting locations spread around the state for those who want to bet on horse racing without visiting a racetrack.

Horse racing fans can use AMWager, BetAmerica, Betfair Exchange, TVG/4NJBets, and TwinSpires to bet online. BetMGM will soon join NJ's lineup of best horse racing betting sites.

Horse and jockey Daily fantasy sports

New Jersey residents can participate in daily fantasy sports contests at Boom Fantasy, DraftKings, FanDuel, FantasyDraft, Monkey Knife Fight, and Yahoo Daily Fantasy. DraftKings and FanDuel have the most players and offer the bigger prize pools. Additionally, you can sign-up and claim the ProphetX promo code today.

      Responsible gaming in New Jersey

As gambling in New Jersey becomes more accessible, the state has developed resources to assist problem gamblers. Players can leverage preemptive measures to lessen the likelihood that they will run into trouble with gaming. The self-exclusion program, implemented by the Division of Gaming Enforcement, allows players to voluntarily exclude themselves from online and land-based casinos.

Keeping a strict gaming budget with limits on how much money is deposited and setting loss limits can also slow progress if you are having problems with gambling.
