Dylan Larkin scored in the opening minute, Jonathan Bernier made 39 saves, and the visiting Detroit Red Wings defeated the slumping San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Monday.

Andreas Athanasiou and Christoffer Ehn also scored for Detroit, which has won four of its past five games.

The Sharks have lost six straight for the first time since March 2017. Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl scored the goals for San Jose, which won six consecutive games prior to the slide. Martin Jones made 20 saves.

San Jose center Joe Pavelski, who has a team-high 37 goals, missed his fourth game in a row due to a lower-body injury. Pavelski had a hat trick in the first meeting between the teams on Feb. 24, a 5-3 Sharks victory.

The Wings jumped in front just 38 seconds in the contest. Larkin got behind the defense and scored off a feed from Anthony Mantha, his 28th goal of the season. Tyler Bertuzzi also picked up an assist.

That was the lone goal of the period as Bernier made 11 saves.

Danny DeKeyser nearly gave Detroit a two-goal edge in the second period, but his shot clanged off the goalpost.

Athanasiou notched his 29th goal at the 15:37 mark of the middle period on a breakaway after a feed by rookie Taro Hirose. That was Hirose's fourth assist in as many games after being signed as a free agent from Michigan State earlier this month.

With Dylan McIlrath in the penalty box for slashing, Ehn scored a short-handed goal at the 8:35 mark of the third. Luke Glendening set it up when he fed the puck from behind the net to Ehn, who scored his third goal of the season. Darren Helm was also credited with an assist.

Kane put the Sharks on the board just 20 seconds later with the power play still ongoing. He scored in front of the net off feeds from Tim Heed and Joe Thornton.

Hertl scored with five seconds remaining off assists from Kevin Labanc and Timo Meier.
