what category does nascar fall in....................
We all know the answer to that. Nascar falls in to the Speed channel category. It should never be discussed in the same arena as sports.

I dont think the statement was really that far fetched; only in tigers case though. He is ripped and has great eye hand cordination, if he's fast and spent his lfe training for it id say its probable.

In my opinion every sport has non athletes. Let's put this crew in a 5k race:
Anthony Kim, Yao Ming, Cecil Fielder, and Jamarcus Russell.
Who are you taking for a grand?
Point being, you don't have to be athletic to be in sports, but some atheletes play in non contact "games."

Jamie Moyer is 47.......wasn't Julio Franco even older? Is baseball not really a sport or not requiring athleticism?
Are you serious?? That happens extremely rare in baseball. Both of those guys are freaks of nature since baseball started Moyer is the 6th oldest pitcher in history and franco at age 49 at the time was the 4th oldest position player in mlb history..., and its not like they are great players in their 40s. Golfers can be extremely good and win majors in their 40s. Go to the avg age of a player in baseball and the avg age of golfers...

Golf is a sport and golfers are athletes
I think being an athelete has to do with phisical fitness and more importatntly what you can do with a ball
billiards and bowling are also sports and the players are atheletes, well the good ones are

I believe golf takes a very special set of skills and quite a bit of athletisicm. You have to be very good with your hand-eye coordination. Strength and stamina play an important part as well. How well could you play other sports if your hand eye coordination were not good, even if you are lean and have speed? Maybe Soccer?
I think the reason many believe golf is not athletic is because almost everyone can play it and enjoy it, but how many can play it well. Not many. I have tried several sports and consider myself a pretty decent athlete, and golf is the definitely the most difficult sport I have ever tried to be good at. Sure, you don't have to run, but you have to use your physical skills along with your mental toughness and determination to be successful, and it takes a lot of practice (or at least it does for me).
By the way, it does irritate me to a degree to look at the heavy guys on tour like the Stadlers, Herron, De Jonge, Petterson, etc and know I couldn't touch them on the course...and I am 2 Hcp. It has taken me several years to get to this level. But that is part of the beauty of the game that should give us "athletes" hope to improve, because surely we should be better than those fat guys...

Some golfers are athletes, some aren't
Golf, like bowling, darts, billiards, ping pong, horseshoes are recreational sports, meaning most anyone, regardless of age, can participate without a big reduction in performance.
Walking 18 holes is tough, and 72 holes over four days is really tough, but so what. I know 80 year olds that walk 18 every day of the week, and he is an excellent player, but an athlete?
I have a buddy that I play golf with, he is a scratch golfer, very accurate, hits them long and straight, soft touch around the green, consistent at putting, great player, but an athlete? Any sport which you can participate in, while puffing on a cigar, and slamming back a cold beer on every hole, is not a true sport, and by no means makes that person an athlete.
I know a guy who plays pool, can shoot the lights out, excellent player, but an athlete? hell he gets winded walking to his car.
Great golfers, get much respect from me, because it is such a hard game to master, but come on guys, they are not out there running marathons, jumping, sliding, doing anything strenuous, they walk to their ball, not even carrying their own bag, take a club, hit the ball, and so on and so on and so on.
playing hopscotch takes more athletic ability than playing golf

I would like to see any of you put a golf ball inside 5 feet from a 100 yards.
Let alone make a 12 footer for birdie on the last hole to win 500k.

putting the ball 5 feet from the flag from 300 yards, and sinking 50 foot puts are another story But still not because they are athletic.

So if they arent atheletes what are they??
Something makes them able to controll a ball better than the average joe its hand eye coordination and a balance and a natural understanding of physics
Some sports require a a certain physique and level of fitness but thats not what makes them athelets
Golfers are atheletes bodybuilders are not

If any of you "althetes" say no to this post (which I might add could be the longest topic post ever for such a simple question) try and be half as good at golf as you are at any other sport. Golf is a sport... and one hell of a game to master.
