Seriously ????

FADE  FADE FADE $$$

Arizona State made it official and hired Edwards as its 24th head coach on Sunday night.

While Edwards hasn't coached since being fired by the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2008 season, the 63-year-old showed he had plenty of fire on Monday.

"Turn the TV on Wednesday. I'll be back in studio in Bristol (at ESPN), and I'll be coaching football by the way," Edwards said. "That's what I do. I coach football. And I have been coaching football my whole life."

Edwards said his last day at ESPN will be Friday, and then he will be back working for Arizona State and recruiting.

"When you sign on to do something, you finish," he said. "You don't tap out. I'm going to finish my work week and then I'll be here Saturday night."

Edwards quoted former ASU star linebacker Pat Tillman, citing his passion for the game, as why he's ready to return to a more active role in the game.

"Football ignites my soul," Edwards said. "It's what makes me go. This is what I do. I've done this my whole life."

Edwards also referenced his former coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, person Vermeil, noting how he still demonstrated the willingness to coach long after he transitioned into the broadcast booth.

"You don't forget how to coach," Edwards said. "They're not bringing me here to play. I can't play, although I'll tell you I got one hit left."

Edwards has been a studio commentator for ESPN since his last coaching job with the Chiefs from 2006-08. He also was the coach of the New York Jets from 2001-05.

As an NFL head coach, Edwards owns a 54-74 regular-season record. He was 39-41 with the Jets, who reached the playoffs three times in his tenure.

Edwards succeeds Todd Graham, who was dismissed by the university on Nov. 26. Graham was 46-31 in six seasons for Arizona State. He went 18-19 in the final three seasons but guided the school to a bowl game for the fifth time in sixth seasons this year. Graham is expected to coach Arizona State in the Sun Bowl against North Carolina State.

Edwards' only college coaching experience was from 1987-1989, when he was the defensive backs coach at San Jose State.

Dubs,

When I saw your headline, I immediately thought "Fade, FADE!" too.  Herm is terrific on TV, but I'm "young" enough to remember he was a FORGETTABLE coach.   RichRod is smiling along with everyone in Tucson.

Will your bookie take my fade action?

Recruits are always enlightened by an 80-year-old geezer who hasn't coached since the Roman Empire collapse.

we are living in the twilight zone

Sumlin would have taken that job and his offense is perfect for the Pac12, not to mention he is an amazing recruiter, ASU made a grave error here

wow, just wow, shocking stuff

hmmm that makes sense .... What a horrible connection between these 2

Feel Bad for the Football program for the next 3+ years ...

Right now I would forecast they win no more than 2 PAC12 games next year ( without seeing the schedule)

This truly bizarre. I live in Tempe now. And when I was driving home Tuesday, this was the main discussion. Just a bizarre hire....

I am not a robot.

And I remain faceless in the new "improved" style....thanks again, Coversthumbs_down

I predict the offense goes in the toilet and the defense is only slightly better...

Graham was confounding to play on/against.......reminded me a little of Sark: Cover some tough games---blow some easy ones. I started staying away from ASU for the most part.
Edwards rah-rah style might play for a while, but in the end, I'm guessing they'll be no better, & maybe worse, than they were under Graham.

It's not clear he even knows that ASU's teams are called the Sun Devils.  See this video at 12:18 --

Herm is a clown but I could see him recruiting well and upgrading the talent at ASU.  The staff he puts together will determine whether or not he flops.

No doubt Herm is a clown show but never underestimate how important an NFL pedigree is on the recruiting trail.  Kids are familiar with him from his ESPN NFL coverage and parents and high school coaches will remember him coaching in the NFL.  ASU will likely get some good talent but it remains to be seen if Herm can actually coach.  His coordinators will have a lot to do with his success or failure.

I agree he will recruit......And I think he knows football........Dont think its the worse hire in the world and an upgrade.......I think Kevin Sumlin would have been a better hire though........Agree his assistant coaches will play a big part in his success
