Hard to say......this is his first HC gig on any level. But he has been an excellent DC & has coached under some good HC's, including Chris Petersen. Cal is a tough job. Might take a couple years to recruit their way out of the Dykes era. I would bet that they'll be a good value play in the 2nd half of 2017.

OK, Mugg and TD...can the new coach turn things around?
I have my early opinion/read but rather here from the other side. What is Mugg and Mr. TD saying about this team?
Not this year..... Cal is a tough place to win at consistently, maybe they'll get it going by year 3 or 4. Maybe not. Time will tell on that.
I think 2017 is going to be a tough year for Cal. Of course the point spread is the great equalizer, but even so, that schedule is not much for building confidence early in the season. A lot of new faces on offense (O-line & QB) and a new scheme on defense for a defense that allowed over 40 ppg in 9 of 12 games. NG is a little undersized for the new 3-4. They'll improve on D with Wilcox, just may be tough to tell early in the year against teams like Ole Miss, USC, Oregon, and Washington in games 3-6. Too many new O-linemen. The leader of that position group in career starts is a former walk-on. What would have been their best returning O-lineman plays for......Oklahoma State. Do they have a quarterback? I have no idea. Somewhat doubt it given a starter did not emerge from spring ball and 1 of the 2 supposed 'front runners' was a 2-star recruit signed the year after Jared Goff started as a true FR (they couldn't get anyone else better because Goff was already locked in as the starter). If Beau is still running the same offense he learned (played in) for my old man, then he's going to need a strong QB to run that passing game. He always did well at Eastern in having a strong QB on the roster. It would not surprise me at all if they went with a FR at QB at some point in 2017 and took their lumps for this year and came back in 2018 with a returning starter to build around and become a multi-year starter. As a sidenote, 10+ other teams in this 12 team conference return a starting QB. Colorado being the 11th team, with Montez seeing quite a bit of time last year and ready to step in as the full time guy in 2017. Cal is the only team in the league that cannot say that.
