So why did Toronto do it? Give up DeRozen with no guarantee they get anything for Kawhi. Don't underestimate the GM there - dude is smart.
First off - they wanted DeRozen out. They know they need to re-tool. An overhaul....
They also now CONTROL Kawhi in terms of him NEVER going to another Eastern Conference team - specifically Philly - who wanted him BAD.
They know Kawhi does NOT want to be in Toronto...and that's why they traded for him. They also know Kawhi said he was willing to play for either the Lakers OR the Clippers.
So, the Toronto GM will be on the phone to both L.A. teams to negotiate a trade for the coming year. Yep, a little mini bidding war for Kawhi. Of course, vindictive Pop had no interest in doing this - he didn't want to be seen givng Kawhi what he wanted.

Why would either the Lakers or Clippers trade for him this year? Everything I read is that he has zero interest in playing in Toronto, so play this year and leave next year and don't cost either those teams the pieces that will help you win.

First of all, you are talking from Kawhi's perspective. But HIS perspective doesn't matter. The Raptors control him now....not the other way around.
Second of all, the fact that he has zero interest in playing in Toronto is correct. But you are talking about next year. I am talking about this coming year!
So if Kawhi says he will play for either L.A. team, there is competition for his services. Toronto's smart G.M. will now trade him to the best offer. So Kawhi will be happy to not have to play in Toronto - at all.
If you are Kawhi, what would you rather do:
1. Play in L.A. for 2018-2019 with a team that gave up something for you...OR
2. Freeze in Toronto for a year all because you want to make sure the L.A. team not give up something in a trade (because we all know that Kahwi is a SAINT, lol)

I agree with you Ben in principle...throw out the Clippers scenario that simply aint happening (that's just Jerry West spin to muck up the Lakers due to his beef with the Buss family)...Lakers can get him for free after the season obviously, and if by the trade deadline it becomes apparent that JamesAngeles would get destroyed by the Warriors in the playoffs sure they will wait...but let's say the LAkers come out of the game with a 10-2 or 20-5 type start to the season and LeBron looks phenomenal...you better believe the LAkers will do whatever it takes to get Kawhi in a trade at the deadline in order to not waste a potential "miracle season" with LeBron still near his peak...father time waits for no one and you really never know how JAmes will be physically in the 2019-20 season.

Never underestimate The Logo. He's 10 times the killer Kobe and Magic are combined. In fact, you make this point.
Go ahead and check up on the Raptors current Boss of B-ball. Guy is extremely sharp. He didn't make this deal only to dump DeRozen and play keep away from the Sixers.

You thinking that the Raps have all the control is very. Like the Spurs had control of him last year? How did that work out for them?

Ben,
The Hawk is turning over in his grave at your comments.
Does Kawhi have a no-trade clause? Toronto can trade him to Siberia if they want to. He is THEIR property.

Irish...I think you're missing the point here...Toronto indeed has control of him but only for one season...beyond that he's open to the highest bidder of his choosing as a free agent...this isn't a video game where only the next game or season counts...what happens in the future to a franchise when they lose a superstar to free agency has multiple consequences if there is not a real contingency plan in place

PB,
Think this through. Whether Kawhi is traded or not, he is a free agent in 2019, correct? (Of course, if he is traded to L.A., they will likely work out a new deal) But if your point is free agent $$$, this is the same no matter what. The "bidding war" will still be between the L.A. teams. This is from Kawhi's perspective.
In terms of a franchise "losing" a superstar....that bridge has been crossed. It's already known. Both the Spurs and Raptors have thrown in the towel on Kawhi and DeRozen.
Toronto is playing this smart - they will likely end up with some nice players in exchange for Kawhi. Pop is happy because he's the tough guy and the Holy Spurs System is saved.

All of a sudden he tweaks something can’t play till December raptors are tanking desperate for something L.A. slides in gets him for way less than expected
if he pulls the same "i'm hurt and don't care what any of the team doctors say" bs, I promise you the likelihood is high that he will be blacklisted among all the other teams owners just like Kaepernick was and they will make a perfect example out of him moving forward in that they make sure the players in the future don't think can get away with this...

He doesn't have to say that. It's what the Raptors want to do. Their GM, again, is no idiot.
They can TRY to trade him as much as they want, the question is if Lakers and Clippers know he want to be there why would they give up a bunch to get him. If you think that him on Lakers when they will have to give up pieces to get him is beating GS I guess we agree to disagree.

Totally different IMO, Lakers dont care if he facks Raptors over. This is part I dont get for them, if you are trading for him I would think that you would have talked to him or his team and got a feel that he would at least be invested in this year. I really think the chances of him resigning with them in nil.

people have been known to change their minds...perhaps Kawhi tells his uncle to step off and is finally ready to cut the umbilical cord and man up...Toronto is a great sports town when their teams are winning...KAwhi would be treated like a god here if he buys in

No way Raptors trade Kawhi mid season...They have a pretty good team that will compete with the Celtics in a weak eastern conference. They were a #1 seed that won 60+ games in the regular season and now the've upgraded their best player.

Totonto - Smart as a Fox.
Your theory makes zero sense.
If Raptors were/are planning to trade Kawhi...they would have done a 3 way trade with the with the Spurs already and got the players they want for a rebuild from another team such as the Lakers. There is no point in waiting and gong thru the 1st half of the season and waiting to trade Kawhi. As each day goes by...Kawhi loses trade value as he is a free agent next summer.. Raptors will be a very good team with Kawhi and if their plan is to tank...they would want to tank from the start of the season to get a high draft pick.
Now with Kawhi..they are in it to win it and compete with Boston.

On your 3-way trade theory though....that would have required the Spurs effectively dealing with L.A. And there was NO WAY Pop was doing that. Despite all the love being spewed out today from Pop, he was NEVER going to be a part of what Kawhi wanted. Ever.
Btw, who says more trades aren't coming before the end of summer? Magic just needed to refuel his plane after visiting with Manny.

Almost impossible another trade happens before the season....What comes in must go out. Lakers are capped out this season already with all their signings of free agents ...You can't trade recently signed free agents until half the season. Kawhi makes $20 Million...So Lakers will have to send out $20 Million, which means stretching Deng's contact and Ingram and Ball will be gone to match salaries and they would still be short.
