You are wrong with your numbers...
Bettis was the 2nd leading rusher in the NFL in 1993.
Bettis was the 3nd leading rusher in the NFL in 1996.
Bettis was also the 3rd leading rusher in the NFL in 1997.
1993
1. Emmitt Smith had 1,486.
2. Jerome Bettis had 1,429.
1996
1. Barry Sanders had 1,553.
2. Jerome Bettis had 1,431.
1997
1. Barry Sanders 2,053
2. Terrell Davis 1,750
3. Jerome Bettis 1,665
I said top 3 backs (overall),not top 3 rushing yards.
1993 - Emmitt Smith and Thurman Thomas both took their teams to the Super Bowl and had better years than Bettis as did Marcus Allen and Barry Sanders.
1996 - It's easily arguable that Bettis was not in the top 5 as Ricky Watters,Terry Allen,Curtis Martin,Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis, and possibly Emmitt Smith all had more productive years.
1997 - Barry Sanders and Terrell Davis were a clear 1-2 as they both had over 2,000 yards from scrimmage. I'd put Dorsey Levens at #3 as he had more TDs,more yards from scrimmage, less fumbles than Bettis, plus he led his team to their second consecutive Super Bowl.
If you need 3 yards,Jerome will get you 3 yards.
If you need 7 yards,Jerome will get you 3 yards.

Bettis was a "compiler", he was never cosidered one of the top 3 backs in the league at anytime during his career.Plus he was not a threat at all in the passing game.

Well... I said it was ridiculous. Not stupid. It's fine if you think Bettis shouldn't get in, but to say they should let every RB in if he gets in... that's just ridiculous.

Not sure what you're trying to say there in the bold. BTW... Hines Ward I think will get in, and I think he deserves it. He's hands down the toughest receiver to ever play the game.
He's currently 8th all time in receptions.
He's been an MVP of a Super Bowl.
He's 18th all time in receiving yards.
He's tied for 13th all time in receiving TD's.
He's been in the Pro Bowl four times.
He's been voted All-Pro four times.
He'll get in the Hall. And he deserves it.

If you need 7 yards you typically don't give it to your power back.
Besides that, Bettis had plenty of long runs in his career. You act as if he was the equivalent of the Fridge.
If you're going to post, please post something with some validity.

You're just wrong. I'm sure there are many "non-homers" that think he should get in.
Hey they let Riggins and Namath in
Of course, Cris Carter has been bypassed for four years now. So there's really no telling what those voters think or if they think at all.
I've just realized that this entire thread is pointless with all due respect to the person that started it. The voting comittee obviously doesn't know what they're doing, so what's the point in discussing whether or not Bettis (or anyone else for that matter) should get in? After all, if he REALLY doesn't deserve to get in, then he probably WILL get in.
