completely different scenario. that game as you know as at death valley in clemson, and auburn was taking 13 new starters out of 22, into that early season game. trotter was the QB, and while decent, this yr's group has more seasoning due to last year.
it's completely different year to year. last year the team had so many new guys off the 2010 bcs title team. i made a huge wager on Clemson -3 over Auburn last year, but this year at a neutral site in atlanta, revenge on auburn's mind and a much more veteran group, i think it's gona be a very very close game either way.
i'm curious to see how clemson's 3 new starters up front (2 of whom are soph's) will do, and how much they miss the explosive Mr. Watkins.
my 2 cents
Maybe it's not too late for Auburn to coax Trotter out of retirement. He would be the best QB on the roster.

wow, you are not taking into account how much the experience of starting one year translates into improvement the next year, most of the time
. . . and you're not taking into account that Auburn is a program that is in complete disarray. The inmates are running the asylum over there.
Furthermore, you are not taking into account that Auburn doesn't have a SEC caliber QB on their roster, have no playmakers on offense (except maybe their TE Lützenkirchen), have two new coordinators that are breaking into two new systems - one of which they don't have the personel to run.
Auburn's high water mark this season is probably 6 & 6, and betting on them in the first 5 weeks of the upcoming season would be financial suicide IMO.
Clemson had one of the youngest teams inthe entire nation last season with over 65% of their roster being freshman or sophmores. Personally I believe the gap between Auburn and Clemson has widen, not shrunk. Moreover, Clemson has plenty of weapons on offense even without Watkins. They'll win the game either way.

As Jimmy said nobody was younger in the country then Clemson last season.
Look, this Clemson team is absolutely loaded at the skill position. If this team had a SEC caliber defense right now, I think you could start talking national Championship. That's really whats is separating Clemson from taking that next step among the elite. Because offensively, not many are better.
Let me add this. Dabo is addressing the defensive problems by going out and recruiting some of the best defensive players in the country.
Just so you guys know............ We already have the 5* Nkemdiche kid. We are more then likely about to land 5*Montravious Adams.( if you haven't seen that kids film, go watch it..WOW ) Kendall Fuller the other *5 CB. And the other *5 CB, cant think of his name right now.... But point is, this sleeping Giant...is about to wake.

Boom Boom, i consider Brent Venables to be one of the young stars in the defensive coaching ranks, but it will take some time, likely 5 games or more for the players to get really comfortable in his new schemes

I pretty much agree with your entire post Boom.
247 Sports ranks Robert Nkemdiche and Montravius Adams as the #1 and #2 recruits in the nation respectively. That won't help them in the Auburn game though.
The CB you're talking about is Kendall Fuller out of Olney, Maryland (my old neck of the woods).

. . . but the Auburn players will pick up their new offensive and defensive schemes in game 1???

Clemson ranked the most talented offensive team in the nation. Keep in mind this list based strictly on talent alone, not necessarily who the author thinks will be the top ranked offenses.

if watkins is playing, i put clemson in the top 5 offenses in the country, but if he's not, they are top 10-12 but i don't think top 5.
notre dame in the top 5 by that writer is AN ABSOLUTE JOKE
with regards to the clemson D, i would take the auburn D right now over clemson's.
i cannot get out of my mind that 3 of the last 4 games in 2011, clemson lost in blowouts and gave up 141 points on D, including 70 to west virginia on a neutral grass field. that is insane.
clemson also lost 3/4 of their starting defensive line. we'll see how quickly the new guys (2 of whom are sophs) adapt.
yes, both teams have new schemes to adapt to, which is just another reason why the line at clemson -2.5 is the right one, neither team is really far ahead of the other especially in game 1
