Fair enough. Actually I think what makes me and a lot of NBA fans to call it like this is because teams rush these kids into roles just because they played a year of college ball. Players like Lou Williams of my Sixers have become what they are because they were eased into the league out of high school (or a year of college, same thing).
A.Davis and players like Kidd Gilchrist aren't going to be given a pass for 2-3 years with a national title on their back. They are going to have to step in right away and contribute or be considered busts. I don't think the kind of kids ready to do that at this point in their lives. I saw that in Derrick Rose, I saw that in Kevin Durant. I saw that in Tyreke Evens (even though he hasn't turned up so far... injuries?).
It's that "it" factor. None of these kids had it from Kentucky. None of them. They were great as a team, and as a team kids that talented will win if they believe in each other. But it's also because none of them was THAT good. They didn't have a player who stepped up when it was needed because no one on this team has that next level. Not right now. Durant had it when he jumped ship, so did D Rose. Tyreke definitely had it, I had him pegged for a star in the NBA, I think he will get there if healthy and allowed to play the 2 guard role for good.
This draft resembles the 2010 draft IMO. A bunch of overhyped overachieving college freshman and sophomores, not ready to jump in with the big dogs.
Wall, Turner? Busts as top 2 picks. I know Turner first hand, nothing but a role player. I see the Sixers play Wall 4-5 times a year, whatever, he still lacks the killer instinct he lacked at UK.
Favors, Johnson, Udoh, Aminu, Hayward, George? I know what your thinking... hey ! I remember Hayward he was that white boy from Butler...
So.. 2012 draft?
Davis and Drummond remind a lot of Favors and Udoh.. promising shot blockers with an unpolished offensive game.
Barnes reminds me of Johnson... an OK offensive player with no true identity and no ability to defend... looks like another role player at best.
George is as confusing as Gilchrist. What exactly is he?
Naturally all the comparisons won't be there, but I see a comparison between two big men both suited for the NBA.
Demarcus Cousins and Thomas Robinson are both 2 men who were made to play in the NBA. Robinson took 3 years to develop into what Cousins was coming out of highschool. A MAN. That's what it takes to be an NBA big man. Robinson is a man, and Davis is still a kid. Cousins was a man as a freshman, Davis is not. Note that both Cousins and Robinson had inferior talent alongside them when they were in man mode.
So if any high draft is likely to be successful, I think it will be Robinson.
I actually like lower ranked draft picks. Guys like Marcus Teague and Dion Waiters will have a chance to develop as players in a limited role with good teams.
Guys like Darius Miller and Draymond Green will be step in guys right away to help contending teams with late round draft picks. Miller would be great on the Heat behind Chalmers and Green might looks great as a starter right now on the Lakers.

Anthony Davis is everything the scouts thought Greg Oden would be as a freshman. Davis length, agility, size, and footwork will make him an all-NBA defender the moment he suits up in a pro uniform. Think Tyson Chandler with a splash of Tim Duncan. Offensively he should be much better than Marcus Camby but with Camby caliber defense and rebounding.

Everything you just said is why I laugh at people who say this UK team is better than UF or UNC from previous champions of 06 07 and 09. I couldn't agree more with the lower picks view. People think the NBA draft is like the NFL. Where you have top picks who are gonna swing a franchise. How many Lebrons are there really? The top is pretty worthless IMO. Kemba walker 9 seriously? Like that cat has any lasting impact on ANY team who wants to win a ship. Do people not realize how a 5-20 game but a game winner is still not positive? yet over and over the front of drafts look like that. But its every year. Idk who's going 9 this year but I bet he's better than Kemba. Your comment on Teague and Waiters kinda made my point though. They might not be the reason there's buzz around this draft, but they could very well be the reason its good. In today's game, like I said, the draft is just like that. Guys come out too early. I always think everyone is gonna suck b/c at 20 they have some MASSIVE weakness in their game that I just can't process them getting better at. But some do, and 5 years from now our opinion of this draft and these players at 25 instead of 20 might be different.

Word. No doubt about it. That's why these low first round picks have a chance to develop. No pressure, learn the ropes, grow up, put on some muscle, then get ready to step in.
The underdeveloped lottery picks are put in harms way immediately. They are expected to save a bad team when they don't even know who they are as players? A very few are ready to do this, but not 1 from this crop.

It's a weak draft class. That simple. Davis is a good defensive player but he has no offensive game and will not make a difference in the NBA... Tyrus Thomas anyone?

Davis is a game changer athlete and defender. Those guys are winners in the NBA. Unbelievable how stupid people are. Tyrus Thomas was a 6'8 forward. Davis is a 7-footer with the athleticism of a guard.

Really. Give me the NBA difference makers. Honestly... who will make an actual impact in the NBA the next 2-3 years? Davis is a PROJECT who will require several years of development with the right team if he is going to be a player in the league (think Bynum).
The problem is, he is going to a team that will expect him to be a star right away which he is obviously not. Gilchrist has a chance, but honestly he is between a 2 and a 3. He's not quick enough to guard NBA 2 guards and probably not big enough to guard and score on the 3's.
Sullinger, Barnes, Henson, Jones? Please, none of those kids will amount to anything in the NBA.
If there is one future all star in this draft, it is Bradley Beal of Florida, and even he will need the right environment/coaching to get there.
agree with you on Beal.............I think Damian Lillard will be an all-star as well

Anybody who doesn't think Davis will make an significant impact in the NBA is full of shit! You're opinion is based on 1 game where he still had rediculas numbers outside of points. Did KU do a great job against him on the defensive end... yes... does that mean he cannot develop into a premier superstar in the NBA... no fucking way... You guys are also forgetting that Davis is playing with 4-5 other NBA players on Kentucky. It is really hard to significantly shine when your entire starting lineup and first man off the bench are no doubt NBA players. Why do you think just about all of the starters on the team avg double digit scoring for the entire year. Suprisingly this team was very unselfish for their age... I think Davis will have a great NBA career and is deserving of the #1 overall pick.

Its tought to say now....I had my doubts about him but he's only 19....still growing etc....if he puts on some muscle he could be a real force....besides that centers is the weakest position in the NBA in terms of skill and depth at the position...personally I'm a sixers fan, our starting center is Spencer Hawes and before we got this stiff we had an even bigger stiff in sammy dalembert....think about your top 5 centers in NBA roughly Howard bynum al horford. Al Jefferson kevin garnett Noah hibbert marc gasol etc... you're telling me he cant become as good as even half the guys on that list....it will depend on a few things such as his development as a man in terms of how big he can get as well as situation, staying healthy etc

Some of these comments are hilarious. Davis will be a stud in the NBA. He certainly needs to bulk up and will get pushed around some, but he is also more athletic and quicker then the guys he will go against. Sullinger on the other hand is the guy I expect very little impact. Just look at the history of large dudes that lack athleticism. It's not a good history.

Davis does have amazing hands. For those that don't know he was originally a guard up until his freshman season in high school where he started a growth spurt of 10" inches that didn't stop until his senior year. He has the hands, instincts, and passing ability of a guard. He's a player unlike we've ever seen.

On the road all day, listening to satellite radio, Larry Brown, Bobby Knight, Coach K and a few more think the kid is the next Bill Russell, Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan.
The kid is a phenomenal athlete, and for who ever said he only scored 2 points, you dont know shit about hoops. MVP goes 1-10, he can score, but he controlled the game without scoring
