Another "green energy" idea falls by the way side.
DETROIT - General Motors Co. has told 1,300 employees at its Detroit Hamtramck plant that they will be temporarily laid off for five weeks as the company halts production of the Chevrolet Volt and its European counterpart, the Opel Ampera.
...
Chevrolet sold 1,023 Volts in the U.S. in February and has sold 1,626 so far this year.
In 2011, Chevrolet sold 7,671 Volts, but fell short of its initial goal of 10,000.
GM had planned to expand production of its Volt plug-in hybrid to 60,000 this year, with 45,000 earmarked for the U.S.

And this was just a few days after Obama said:
“Five years from now, when I’m not president any more, I’ll buy one and drive it myself,

The guy is like King Midas, only in reverse!
Aren't you glad the taxpayers are going to lose about $25 billion on GM?

It never ceases to amaze me the number of so called "Amercians" who relish when an American manufacturer has difficulty with a newly introduced product.

The most "American" thing about the Chevy Volt is the taxpayer subsidy of $7500 per car, for a cost of $57.8 million to the 50.5%er's.... without including administrative costs.
But, this doesn't seem to be enough to get Americans to buy the Volt, so President Obama's new budget proposes a $10,000-per-car subsidy ..of taxpayer money at the tune of $100 million ..
Which comes first: supply or demand ?
In this case it looks like government must step in and spend the taxpayers money ...in order to prop up total demand...

I was looking at a Chevy Camaro about a month ago at a dealership in southern NH. The Camaro was a sharp looking charcoal color all decked out at just under 50k. Next to it was a Volt so I looked at it just because I never saw one just heard about them. The dealership asking price was 56k.....that's why they're not selling.

you really are a nitwit. Maybe just maybe they're educated buyers and when all the numbers are added up the Volt just isn't that good a deal.

Um, I'm all for GM introducing new products.
I'm not for GM being bailed out and GM having to have $5,000 federal tax credits in order to introduce the new products.

Here's some money we will lose Don Juan ... "lost tax revenue"
GM's $45 billion tax exemption.. GM will be able to shield its future profits using past losses using so-called “tax-loss carry-forwards..making them free of taxes for at least 10 years ...
Usually, companies that go through ownership changes face major restrictions put on their tax benefits..Not GM ...
The losses that were incurred by "Old GM," prior to bankruptcy were carried over to be used by the "New GM" ...
GM can use losses in prior years ... costs related to pensions, post-retirement benefits, and property, plants and equipment... to shield profits from U.S. taxes for up to 20 years..

In addition, some Chargers may also suffer from an overheated power distribution center that could result in a loss of the vehicle's anti-lock braking and stability control systems.
I know those cops long for the ol' Ford Crown Vic..

93-year-old Rachel Veitch is retiring her 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente after more than 576,000 miles on the road. "I am legally blind, so I can no longer drive my lovely Chariot,"
After running a red light in March, she decided to voluntarily give up the vehicle she's been driving since Lyndon Johnson occupied the White House.
Yet for all the miles she has put on her vehicle, it doesn't come close to the world record. The Truth About Cars blog wrote that Irv Gordon's 1966 Volvo P1800 is scheduled to reach 3 million miles this year.
Gordon has held the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles on a noncommercial vehicle since 1998.
Even without the world record, Vietch is fond of noting that the car has outlasted three marriages. Mechanically, it's worn through three sets of shocks, 18 batteries and eight mufflers. Veitch bought the car in February 1964 for just $3,289.
She credits the longevity to a "near-obsessive" approach to the car's maintenance. "I've never been a destructive person and I've just taken care of everything, except my husbands,"
