Cuse - you should really post more often. Good to see you.

Satnight - I think the depth is better at Michigan. Im not the guy calling for a UM upset.  I think right now bama is really strong everywhere except a some game experience. Im telling you man I really think Michigan can hang with these guys . Does this mean they can beat Bama? Not saying that, but I will also say this....  I wouldnt be blown away if they did.

Treyinventor - Thanks look around this forum there are plenty of very knowledgeable guys... alot in this thread If covers could remove the garbage posters from this site I think that covers.com could be one of the most informative websites ever.

True. They're going for home state advantage instead of home field. Now they need people in the state to care about the team...

It just occurred to me...I'm wondering how many of the kids were recruited from that area? That's where most of the population is in that state...the eastern part. It would make them play harder if they were in front of friends and family that never make it out to Umass.

I'm thinking about that because of the USC vs Syracuse game in Yankee Stadium this year. Almost 30% of the Syr roster is from Eastern NY, Long Island, and NYC. A few more are from New Jersey so their family will also be closer and get to watch. A large number of Syr kids consider NYC a home game more than The Carrier Dome.
Not being an behind cuse but don't they play usc at metlife stadium?

Nebraska - For as much as "we" the public love to hate Bo Pelini I bet none of you know what the man's winning percentage is at Nebraska? Just over 70%. To put into better terms, he's won more then most college coaches have. I think everyone's problem is that the guy is just not a likeable guy. I for one, dont have a big problem with him. I think this years Nebraska's team will be much better then the perception of what "we" the public give them. I will say that Taylor Martinez might have the worst throwing motion Ive ever seen a human being have, but with that said, he did throw for over 2000yds last season, LMAO. Look I think this team will go as far as Martinez will take them. We all know Burkhead is a beast who might be the last great white running back the college game has seen in a long time. But they also have a lot of other good experienced players coming back which like Ive said many times over is what helps shape and mold your football team. I think the defense will be aggressive and nasty as usual and should live on the edge. Why? Because the take on the personality of their head coach. I picked Nebraska to finish tied for second with Michigan S.T and both behind Michigan in this division, but I think all three and especially Nebraska has a shot at winning the division. I think Nebraska has the toughest schedule of the three playing Wisconsin @ Ohio S.T @ Northwestern Michigan and @ Michigan S.T in a 5 game stretch that is very tough. Like I say, this is a team that will only go as far as Martinez will take them. I personally think were looking at a 9 win team.

Michigan S.T - I think everyone across the country (or the ones paying attention) notice and respect what Mark Dantoni is doing. I think Michigan S.T is turning into a physical football team that tries to push their opponents around. This is why they play Wisconsin so well, they match there physical nature. I think if this team had a seasoned QB they could be back in the Big Ten championship game, but with that said, you all know how I feel about teams with first year QB's. Im not saying all the time, before you guys bring up guys like Cam Newton, that's the abbreviation. I personally like this back Bell better then I liked Baker. I think now that he the "guy" and doesn't have to split half the load he will become a 1000yd back easy. The one huge spot this team will miss as far as a collective group is the receiving corp. I know everyone wants to talk about the QB being gone but this is a bigger problem then most think. They have almost no experience and depth in this unit and that's scary when your breaking in a new QB. Defensively is what I love about this team. They are a really good group who knows how to get the job done. I think were looking at without question one of the best defenses in the conference. Here is a little something I want to share as a "early" gift for upcoming season. As much as these guys lost on the offense, Boise lost a hell of alot more. This first game between these two will be dominated between the defenses. I think that both the side ( MSU ) and the under could cash in this game. I m looking for a 6 to 7 point spread and a 49 to 51 point total. Overall the schedule is very manageable with the exception of the 4 game stretch which is Iowa,@ Michigan, @ Wisconsin and home to Nebraska. I think we cant gauge what the offense will do so this team is bit of question mark overall if you ask me. I think they will get better as time moves along, but its hard to say that anyone will know for sure. I like about 8 to 9 wins with this team with the possibility of more if the offense shows it can play. Again, what separates these three teams at the top of this division is one guy, Denard Robinson. Michigan has him, the other three dont.

That Sparty D is gonna be Nasty ... so is Nebraska's

Thinking Michigan will take a step back this season ... Might get all their swagger kicked out of them week 1 vs Bama ...

Iowa has some Nice Longshot potential to win the Division ... But both the O and D Lines have some ????

Gerry Dinardo changed my opinion of Sparty this year. Figured they would only be a 7 win team w/o the QB and WR corp. I had to take another look at them and...they could be surprising...

Dinardo was on billisking.com and said that Mich St had the #1 roster in the B10, "top to bottom". The WR and QB are a concern but they have depth everything else.

Basically, they can win every conference game this year 17-13 so they'll be good dogs...probably fade them as a heavy favorite.

Also like the under in week 1.

(FYI for the group: If you don't listen to the Bill is King podcast, you're all missing out on 3 hours of football talk. Every...damn...day. )

Thats a huge concern. No depth at WR is ok if you have a seasoned QB. No depth at QB is ok if you have a deep WR group.... See V.T from last year  Great example. Logan no experience...but his WR's very mature.

Iowa - Iowa is always a interesting team. I for one, like Kirk Ferentz. I also know alot of you dont and that's OK, we cant always agree on everything. But one thing you cant deny about Iowa year in and year out is there toughness. Every time you play Iowa you know what your gonna get, a solid run game with a good defense. This program is place you want to go to become a no name running back who runs for over 1000yds. They do it every year and I expect them to produce another one this year. This team has a QB who quietly threw for over 3000yds and 25 td's and only 7 int, that's pretty good. I think one of the biggest things that cant be over looked is this defense. They return 2 LB who had over 100 tackles each last season and couple that with a solid secondary led by Micah Hyde who might be the best at his position in the conference. The only concern I see on this defense is the DL, but if you have been paying attention the last 10 years you will know that Kirk Ferentz always has his DL at the top of the conference. The schedule isn't bad. These guys dont even play a true road game until October 13th when they go Michigan S.T. The truth is if they beat them in that game, they could really make a run at the division. @ Michigan and @ Northwestern and @ Indiana is it for the road games. If you really compare this schedule to the other in this league, Iowa has a easy ride. All in all I think this is a 8 win team.

Northwestern - If your not pulling for Northwestern to win a bowl game your not American, you too Canadians. I have a few teams that I seem to pull for other then my Clemson tigers and this is one of them. I really like Pat Fitzgerald, if this guy wasn't so loyal to his school he would be up for a few big time programs across college football. This team is a real unknown to me with Kain Colter at QB. I know we got to see him play QB last year when Persa was out, but how good can this guy be with the whole spring, summer and fall camp as the "guy"? We could really have something under the radar here if you know what I mean. One problem. The stat im about to give you, you will never see it again. This years starting QB also comes back as the teams leading receiver. Jeremy Ebert and Dunsmore are gone and there isn't alot of experience in that group which could but alot of pressure on Kain. Defensively this team will have to get better if they ever think they can compete for a division championship. It just seems every year that they just cant get over the hump. Which is a little surprising coming a coach who was a defensive guy himself. I think after looking at the schedule 6-6 is about what we should expect with a huge hope they win their first bowl game since like 1753.

Minnesota - Here again I know this wont be a popular assessment, but I think Minnesota is headed in the right direction. Last year I talked alot about how Jerry Kill is the right guy, I absolutely still believe that. I know it didn't show much last season but this team had to back up and punt and start over. Does that mean the turnaround will be complete this season? No. What it means is that this is a progression, this year a little better, next year a little more. I think this season a least the offense will be more equipped to score some points and run Kill's offense. They have a few holes on defense that might hurt this team in the long run but depth is the real concern right now anyways. Depth means so much in major division 1 college football. It really hurts teams like this who are already a little thin in the play making department anyways. Alot of times you can hide your depth problems when you have one or two really good players to take the attention away. This team hurts for both right now. But Like I said, I think this team and program is headed in the right direction and will look like a much better product this season compared to last. Overall a good season would be 6-6, I think we can settle on about 5 wins realistically.

Boom,

You're an animal.  Your knowledge of college football is unbelievable.  I read your write-ups about the Big 10 teams and agree with the majority of the material.  I think Purdue could really catch some teams napping this season, I've got a soft spot in my heart for Northwestern too and they're always capable of scaring anybody, and Iowa's physicality will keep them in most games.  I'm not too high on the Illini, but I haven't studied up that much yet either.  This year's big boys are definitely: Wisky, MSU, Nebraska, tOSU, and Michigan.  However, nationally, I don't think these teams are Top 5 at all, borderline Top 10.  But there is some serious parity in this conference this upcoming season.  Should be a great season in-conference.

Maybe it's the bias in me, but I just can't see everybody's love for Michigan.  That team had an unbelievably advantageous schedule last season.  Hokes only 2 road wins were a huge 2nd half comeback at NU and a victory over an Illini team that had already thrown in the towel on the season. Now they face Bama, ND, tOSU, Nebraska, and Purdue all away from the Big House.   That could literally be 4/5 losses right there.  UofM truly got lucky last season.  They shouldn't have beaten ND, tOSU-as bad as they were- should've won at the Big House, and Va Tech just flat-out imploded.  Denard is a freak, his athleticism is unmatched, but I think too many people see his highlights and assume he is better than he is.  If you watch him play a full game, he makes so many mistakes as a QB, and they were able to overcome them last year with lucky bounces and a soft schedule.  This year, the schedule is tough as hell and will they catch the lucky breaks they caught last season?  Who knows?

You're dead-on about MSU.  The passing game of this team will prevent them from being great.  They've got just about every other piece in place, but the one they're missing is a big one.  If Maxwell is as good as we think he can be, they should win the division and play Wisky in a rematch of the championship, if Maxwell underachieves, this team could run into a little bit of trouble.  Worst-case scenario they still should win 8.

I'm short on time, gotta go but look forward to talking football for the next 6 months

Bense I agree that Michigan caught a lot of breaks last year. I for one believe that winning is a disease.... let me explain. When teams start to win, they just find ways to continue the process. But here is the biggest factor. Teams with great history seem to do this even better. In a sense, they carry their tradition with them. When Michigan goes and plays Alabama opening weekend, as much as a underdog as Michigan looks, I think its important to always point out the history factor. Teams with great history carry that with them to big games.... Trust me when I say this, they will NOT be intimidated. If anything, Michigan will actually bring that arrogance with them into that game thinking not only that  they belong, but they should win as well.

Illinois IMO has already improved their football team dramatically with the hire of Tim Beckman. Something that nobody every points out about Illinois is these guys are consistently sending guys to the next level. What does that tell us? They have not just good players there, but NFL caliber players. So what has been the problem? Their problem is very similar to what our problem at Clemson was for so many years. Coaching. Go look at Illinois and Clemson and see how many guys they have put in the NFL over the last decade. Just food for thought.... and as far as the coaching aspect of it, I think Beckman will put his players in the best position to win games. I talk about coaching all the time and how much a difference it makes in between winning and losing games. Parity is really strong across the country now more than ever. Yeah you have teams that are stronger, but in a sense, not much separates teams anymore. Ive always said these 2 things. If you want to win more games you must do these very simple things...1. Coach better. 2. Recruit better. Thats football in a nut shell.

Also thanks for the kind words.  I have been very successful betting on college football through the years, but as I have said many times before. I love this game and I always want it to be known that im a fan of the game first.... and a gambler somewhere way on down the line

I wish Covers would take several of us and do a College football Pre season evaluation for the upcoming season. I think there is about 20 of us guys including yourself that could sit down and talk college football and really have some great insight to share to college football world.

The BIG 12

Oklahoma                 12 - 0  BC           9 - 3  WC
West Virginia            10 - 2  BC           8 - 4  WC
Texas                        10 - 2  BC           8 - 4  WC
TCU                          10 - 2  BC           7 - 5  WC
Kansas S.T               9 - 3   BC            6 - 6  WC
Baylor                       8 - 4   BC            6 - 6  WC
Oklahoma S.T           8 - 4   BC            6 - 6  WC
Iowa S.T                   7 - 5   BC            5 - 7  WC
Texas Tech               7 - 5  BC             5 - 7  WC
Kansas                     6 - 6  BC             3 - 9  WC

Again, your looking at a conference slam full of parity and other than Oklahoma.... not a whole lot separates these teams IMO. I do think Oklahoma will win the conference but as we have seen through the years in the BIG 12...nothing will surprise you.

Oklahoma - I know alot of you guys like to talk bad about Oklahoma. Call them Choklahoma or how Bob Stoops is not a big game coach, non sense. This guy record at Oklahoma is damn near un matched across the country. Did you know this cat is has a winning percentage of just over 80% in his 14 years? How many coaches in the country can say that? He is a great mind for the college game and comes from a great pedigree in coach Snyder. I have this team in my pre season top 5 for a reason and winning the Big 12, Experience. This group is led by another guy who catches too much grief IMO, Landry Jones. The guy has done great things at QB for the Sooners IMO. Yeah his performances on the road have been suspect at times, but hell, that's college football friends, your gonna struggle on the road. I think the offense will again light up the scoreboard as they do most seasons. One big reason is the OL. It's the best in the conference and if you dis agree, watch these guys play a few games then come back and we will talk. I love the defense and thin again they have a lot of play makers who are both good and experienced. Yes adding Mike stoops back to the mix will help. Why? Some guys were just born coordinators. Doesn't mean Venables wasn't the right guy, hell us at Clemson are excited about having him. Venables was a great defensive mind IMO and sometimes players got to man up and make plays. You cant always blame the coaches. One strong point about the defense is the secondary. What one strong area in a defense should a team have in the Big 12? Secondary. If you dont have a secondary in this league be prepared to get torched and possibly look like Baylor last year. Overall the ceiling is as high as it can be for this particular team. I have them at 12-0 at BC for a reason, there good. The schedule is wonderful if you ask me. If this team can survive the last three games of the season with playing @ W.V, home to their rivals OK S.T and @ TCU, then I think we could be looking at one oft the representatives in the NC game.

West Virginia - I think its safe to say that Dana Holgorsen has changed the offense in Morgantown. When W.V announced they were joining the Big 12 last year the happiest man on the planet had to be Dana. The Guy knows the conference, he knows the way things operate and finally he knows that he needs offense to be factor in this league, and offense is his baby. Dana Holgorsen offense is really dynamic and he has some really special guys to run it. Tavon Austin, Stedmon Bailey and QB Geno Smith all are very dynamic and fit very well in this offense. I think it's important to point out that this offensive line may be one of the best in the Big 12 and really if these guys can get the running game going nothing should stop these guys offensively. I dont think Dana has the prototype back he wants or should I say, fits this offense. One huge thing that alot of people didn't notice about this offense last year was although it was efficient, it lacked a back who was a real threat to catch the ball out of the back field. If you watch Oklahoma S.T play it's very important that their running backs be that threat to not only run the ball, but to catch it as well. If you can get potion of this W.V offense going, this might be the best offense in the country this year. Defensively is the reason why im not picking them to win the conference. Whereas the offense is clearly up to par, the defense will take some lumps. Any team going into this league, and I mean any team ( SEC nation ) will go through a adjustment period. Why? The offenses in this league are clearly the best in the country, and please save the bull garbage about well, they dont play real defenses like us.....well, I think the same argument can be made that some conferences play in leagues where teams couldn't score points if you started them on the 50 yd line every possession. Why? Hear is a hint: and I m not naming any conferences. You look good Why? Cause offense doesn't exist in your league. Anyways, back to W.V. The schedule is obviously harder. Why? You ain't in the BE anymore guys, this the Big 12. I expect these guys to be very competitive and should prove their worth to this conference. I really think that 10 wins is a very possibility. If Oklahoma runs the table, I think W.V if they win 10 games could be one of those teams fighting for a, at-large bid.

I would find it hard to believe Dana or any big head coach for that matter would be happy about leaving the Big East, his first year he won the conference and went to a BCS bowl because of the conference they were in. They will compete in the Big 12 though but obviously it will be a world of difference every week than it was.
