Granted, Petco is not the sweetest park to have for a home station, in fact, the N.L. West parks have only two hitters parks, but the overall deal is great. 28 years old with an 8 year deal and an opt-out after 5, when he will only be 33, sets him up both long term and with a chance to capitalize if he continues to improve. Padres must have a lot of confidence in him to surrender that deal.

The Royals couldn't come up with a lousy 18 mil a year? Idiots....
Neither of us is an insider that knows for sure, but I doubt the $18 million was the problem. Eight years with an opt out after five for a 28 year old just is not in the cards anywhere these days. Very risky for the Padres, a gold mine for Hosmer.

Glad to see him out of the AL Central. These guys are all trying to get long term deals and that is risky for almost all but about 4-5 teams. No way a small market team can hold on to anyone. Was a big risk by the Padres.

Any long term deal is a risk sure but the Hosmer deal is the most riskless deal of all the big time FA this year. You have a young stud franchise player in the prime of their career who has never been hurt, is as clutch in a big game as they get as exemplified by back to back WS, and is the definition of a 5 tool player. A few years ago he gets 200 mil without a second glance. With teams holding back this year and being more fiscally prudent as well as holding their purses for 2019 he was underpaid. The Royals will rue the day they let the face of their franchise walk away for nothing.

This is just absurd. Hosmer is not even top 5 1B, let alone might not be top 10. He had a solid contract year, but you are completely overrating him.

He hit 318 and hit 25 HR last season and is young.....Somebody was going to pay him.....He may be a little over paid in the first couple year but he is still making less than Joe Mauer.
