Judging from this article the NHL made very little, if any, attempt to assist one of their "family" members when all the signs were there, that there was a very serious problem as team doctors routinely made an abundance of very addictive and damaging drugs available to him.
Ofcourse this has gone on in all sports forever but it's nice to see someone get called out on it. Good for his pops for digging into the truth.
Further evidence that after all the jersey retiring, banner raising and general fan aimed hoopla, at the end of the day most athletes are just dollar figures in a book to many of these teams.
With the number of prescriptions and the kind of drugs being taken a child could see there was a major problem. To assist the man in his addiction is almost criminal. These were the very doctors that were trusted with his life and they helped end it.
The lion and the tiger may be more powerful, but the wolf doesn't perform in the circus.

that list is scary, as i mentioned in my first post triple scripts are to be held for 5 years, 1 the doctor, 1 the pharmacist,1 state agency,at any time would take as long as it does to get into the covers forums to check this shit out! should this be considered a form of murder?none of these s- bags have the responsability to tell the effing parents!

They may have enabled him to a certain extent, but more than one person tried to help him. He went through re-hab TWICE. Never really admitted he had a problem. From an article written by Michael Russo in the Minneapolis Star Tribune:
With training camps a little more than a week from opening across the NHL, many are still are trying to come to grips with how it is possible Derek could die from alcohol/painkiller toxicity mere hours after getting out of rehab for a second time.
Aaron Boogaard, the younger brother of Ryan and Derek who still lives in the Minneapolis apartment where Derek died, faces charges for giving Derek a non-prescribed, illegal painkiller the evening before he died and flushing the remaining pills down the toilet after he died.
Ryan Boogaard, 27, now an RCMP officer in Saskatchewan, says Derek never could overcome his addiction.
"Derek, he never really ... he never really admitted to having a problem," Ryan said, talking about the grief the close-knit family feels. "He'd always be telling us, 'I'm doing good. I'm doing good.' Derek really never got past that first step."
If Boogaard had gotten to that critical point, Fedoruk said, "He'd still be with us. That's one of the things with the disease of addiction. It's ultimately out to kill you."

And yes, you can blame the doctors and the NHL to some extent, but players get access to drugs from a LOT of different avenues:
Some teammates have privately said Boogaard would ask for Percocet and Ambien on plane trips, and because they didn't know of his addiction, they'd just give them to him.
Bottom line is that they need to streamline the medical care process so players can't go to a bunch of different doctors and get a bunch of different prescriptions. There is no doubt in my mind that they don't ask enough questions, but people like Boogaard would generally find a way to get drugs if he wanted them.

Sounds like team doctors stopped prescribing painkillers after his re-hab in 2009, but the Rangers docs wrote prescriptions even though they knew he had gone through re-hab.
They also believe he was buying from dealers in ADDITION to all the prescriptions he had.
Like I said, if he wouldn't have gotten prescriptions he would have borrowed or bought them on his own. Pro athletes have the means to do so.

Here is the link to the article, by the way. Pretty damaging and eye-opening stuff. But if you look at his behavior, he was going to find a way to get pills if he wanted them.

By the way, where do people run into these doctors? My doctor wrote me a prescription for Xanax....only gave me 10 pills - .25 mg. And he gave me the fifth degree about when and why they are supposed to be used. When I called him to re-fill my prescription he asked me why so soon. I (honestly) told him that I had done some travel that month (and I HATE to fly). He once again reminded me what the xanax was for and said, "remember, they aren't just for recreation when you're laying around on the couch."
Who are these people giving that stuff out like it's candy?

He 100% would have found a way to get them off the street, and ultimately would have met the same demise eventually but I still have a major issue with the apparent amount of prescriptions that were written for him without questions even being asked.
His brother is a whole other story and no doubt one their own father has to come to grips with.
It appears there were enablers all around him, however the doctors are the ones with the licenses and training to recognize these problems.
Many family doctors here won't even prescribe Percocet and for good reason. There is no reason to, there are much less addictive pain killers out there. Just recently Oxy has stopped being manufactured here all together. Some people are finally starting to wake up here.
Thanks for the well thought out response on the issue.

It's amazing how loose teams of yester-year played. Just lousy defense. Lazy. Watch that defenseman on that brake-away....just gives up. People are allowed to just roam free in front.
NJ or LA would beat both those teams by 10 goals even if they made Quick or Martin B. where those goalie pads.

Damn good question. My family doctor simply will not prescribe percocet period. He is in his 60's and has been treating me since I was a kid. He has a huge successful practice and has treated many patients including myself through a lot of pain from surgeries and/or accidents and everyone made it through their pain just fine without the use of Percocet or Oxy.
Just like most things in life, it's all about the money. I am one of those people that think the flu shot is one big lie. Pharmaceutical companies are one of the biggest rackets in North America and people are more than happy to buy into it. Every year the news tells us we have a new dangerous new flu that everyone, especially children need vaccination for. I have never gotten the flu shot in my life and I am yet to catch one of these flus

Defense in hockey was no where to be found in the 80's. The goalie equipment these days is a bit much.

As sad as the Boogaard story is, I think it's important to remember that Derek was a well known pill-popping drug addict. Simple as that. Drug addicts lie, cheat and steal and this is certainly true of Boogaard.
If the NHL team doctors figured that out and stopped writing prescriptions to Derek then Boogaard would have obtained his drugs via other avenues. That is what drug addicts do.
While they do merit some degree of blame, I think that the doctors and the NHL itself are being unfairly used as scapegoats. Almost everyone around Boogaard were turning a blind eye, family and friends included.
Does anyone hold Derek Boogaard or his immediate family responsible? Especially his accomplice brother?

Yes, you need to read the posts in the thread

And yes kona, his brother is being held accountable. Both morally and legally.
The NHL and it`s doctors don`t merit a little blame, they merit a shitload of blame. First of all, the game of hockey introduced him to his addiction. Secondly, just because he is an addict the doctors should just give in and have your attitude that he is gonna kill himself anyway so what the hell, let`s help him do it faster. Sorry I`m not down with that.
There is also a huge difference between being a civilian who is hesitant or afraid to interfere in a mans personal life and using your medical license to help assist an addict with in killing himself. The doctors would have had more knowledge than anyone around him in regards to what and how much he was consuming. They were writing him up hard core prescriptions right after he was getting out of rehab with full knowledge he just got out of treatment for the very same things they were prescribing for him. That is black and white and no lie gets around it. They simply did not give a fuck and the main purpose of their position is to look after the health of the players on the team. They did the exact opposite.
