Can an owner of a horse race him only in 6 and 7 furlong races, and only show him in workouts at those distances, then work him out at 1M or 1 1/4M in private workouts so no one knows about it and get him at a high price in long races.
I only ask because I really dont see Trinniberg doing anything after the 7 1/2 furlongs so I dont see the reasoning for him in this race.

Yes, as far as I know, the owner and trainer can take the horse wherever they want to. He's not a prisoner at the race track.
If they have a facility or training track where they could work the horse at longer distances without anybody knowing about it, then they can do that.
The workouts that you see in the various Racing Forms aren't recorded by anybody at the track. That's done by private clockers who then report it to Equibase, Daily Racing From, Brisnet, etc.. If they aren't around, then nobody is going to know about anything the horse and trainer are doing somewhere else.
And I've always had doubts about the accuracy of workout information anyway since it's done by hand with a stopwatch. Very high probability of human error in those times.

Sorry, I was wrong about the racetracks not having their own clockers. The article below says that every racetrack has official clockers who time all the workouts on a given day and then report it to Equibase, who then passes it along to Daily Racing Form or Brisnet.

There would be no way to make the workouts private if being raced at a track like Keeneland or Churchill (where most of the Derby horses are right now) There are several reporters, other trainers, track workers, and other scouts in the vicinity.
If you remember last year a few of the longshot horses' trainers covered their horses distinct feature to disguise the horse during some derby week morning workouts. Many of the on track reporters and scouts were confusing the horses with another horse.
