PLAYER : With all due respect commissioner, I would like to appeal.
GOODELL : Thank you. The NFL shall review your case.
5 Seconds later.....
GOODELL : After extensive review of my work, the work was perfect, thorough and beyond reproach. I agree with everything I said, wrote and thought and would like to commend myself for such excellent, thoughtful work. Suspension upheld.

Even if I wasn't from New Orleans and a lifelong Saints fan I would still agree. How can the person who rules on a case be the next step in the appeals process?
The ruling that gets me the most is the Saints could be penalized if someone talks to Sean Payton. How can this be enforced? Name one job or any example for that matter where if an employee or member of an organization speaks to someone else who is suspended (or fired) will be punished for speaking to that person. Every night Drew Brees should go to Sean Payton's house and talk X's and O's and there shouldn't be a damned thing Goddell could do about it.
I know congress has a lot on their plate and I'm not saying they should investigate (yet) but somehow these ruling seem to violate Freedom of Speech and possibly Commerce.

It is ridiculous. They need an independent panel of players, owners and maybe ex refs to give some legitimacy to the process. As it stands now, it is a total farce and seems to exacerbate the situation.
Imposing restrictions that are nearly impossible to monitor and enforce is absurd. Thats the situation Goodell put himself in because he thinks he is the GD king of the NFL. I wonder if anyone over there ever thinks about how this garbage resonates in the real world.
I am pulling for you with the appeals, but I wouldnt be very optimistic..

First of all, it's total bullshit. However, my question is why would the players association agree to that shit? If I'm correct, the commish set the punishment, and rewiew all appeals. WTF is that?

They need a committee... Goodell being judge, jury and executioner is BS... I know they agreed to this, but basicly did so under duress... A committee with penalties listed for every violation thinkable... that way everyone knows what their punishment would be rather than having to wait and see what side of the bed Goodell wakes up on... There have been several instances of same violations where he handed down drasticly different punishments... He has been given way too much power..

Come on! They were on strike/lockout! They agreed to the deal. Plain and simple
And if they don't like the rules of their employer they can fucking quit their job! No one is forcing them to play. Plus as said, don't break the rules and you have nothing to bitch about

then we should remove the the league anti-trust exemption for broadcasting. the league was using broadcast $$$ to build a lockout fund to get leverage over the players. they built up the cash reserves to be able to sweat out the players, hurt local communities and enforce monopoly power.

That is why they are owners! It is a business and they are in it (most of them) to make money. Like any business. For example, look at the NBA. Jordan, the OWNER, was one of the more hardline owners as he is now a businessman.
But, that has little to do with the appeals project argument AHD you made to start the thread.

it has everything to do with the appeals process. the players had a weak bargaining position and got a shitty deal. hard to get too worked up about it though....billionaires fighting with millionaires.

They attempted to build a lockout fund but Judge Doty ruled that that deal with the networks violated the existing CBA (the ruling was just prior to the expiration). Therefore the owners would not have had access to that money until a new CBA was reached.
Regardless, the appeals process really needs to change.
