Top-ranked Alabama pummels Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Top-ranked Alabama remained unbeaten by pounding No. 9 Tennessee 49-10 on Saturday in Neyland Stadium.

Behind 400 rushing yards as a team, the Crimson Tide dominated the Volunteers in the rivalry game.

Alabama (7-0, 4-0 SEC) has now won 19 consecutive games while handing Tennessee (5-2, 2-2) a critical defeat.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts improvised on a busted play to pick up 21 yards on a rush during a pivotal sequence. That set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Hurts to break the game open at 28-7 with 9:02 left in the third quarter.

Tennessee kicker Aaron Medley added a 37-yard field goal to make it 28-10 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Hurts added another rushing touchdown to make it 35-10.

Before you could blink, Alabama's special teams joined the scoring. Alabama safety Eddie Jackson returned a punt 79 yards for a score to make it 42-10.

The score give Alabama another non-offensive touchdown. The 11 non-offensive scores for Alabama are the most in a single season during the Nick Saban era.

Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough broke free for an 85-yard touchdown to make it 49-10.

Alabama led 21-7 led at halftime.

On its second drive of the game, Alabama capped an eight-play, 91-yard drive with a 29-yard rushing touchdown from wide receiver ArDarius Stewart.

Stewart's score came off a trick play. Hurts took the snap, flipped the ball to receiver Calvin Ridley who then pitched it to Stewart for the easy score.

As it has all season, Alabama's defense got in on the scoring as well. Alabama safety Ronnie Harrison intercepted Joshua Dobbs pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0.

Tennessee defense came up with a big play early in the second quarter. Tennessee defensive lineman Derek Barnett beat Alabama left tackle Cam Robinson off the edge, and sacked Hurts. Hurts fumbled and Tennessee recovered. That set up a 7-yard touchdown from Tennessee running back Alvin Kamara to make it 14-7.

Alabama's offense responded on its ensuing drive. Hurts used his speed to get to the corner and broke open a 45-yard touchdown run to make it 21-7.

Alabama moved in position for a field goal at the end of the half, but kicker Adam Griffith missed from 37 yards.

NOTES: After being questionable all week, Alabama LB Reuben Foster (concussion) started on Saturday. ... Alabama starting RG Alphonse Taylor (concussion) did not play in the game. Sophomore Lester Cotton started in Taylor's place.
