Rice 23, Kansas 14: Charles Ross rushed for a career-high 157 yards and a touchdown to lead the Owls to a home win over the Jayhawks.

Rice (1-1) had a 370-270 edge in total offense as Taylor McHargue went 14-of-31 for 168 yards and two interceptions. Jordan Taylor caught five passes for 72 yards while Dennis Parks had three catches for 65 yards.

Jake Heaps was 13-of-28 for 157 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Kansas (1-1), including a 77-yard touchdown pass to Tony Pierson, who finished with four catches for 95 yards.

Michael Kutzler intercepted a pass from Heap and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown for the only score of the first quarter. Pierson’s score tied the game midway through the second, but the Owls got field goals of 40 and 28 yards from Chris Boswell to take a 13-7 edge into halftime.

Heaps converted a 1-yard score with 1:01 to play in the third to put Kansas on top for the first time, but Boswell booted a 56-yarder with 8:05 to play to put Rice on top for good. Ross scored on an 8-yard run with 3:28 to play to clinch the win for the Owls.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Ross also set a career highs with 27 carries. … Kansas reached the 100-yard mark rushing as a team on the game's final play after collecting 280 yards on the ground in its season-opening win over South Dakota. … McHargue was held to negative yardage on the ground (minus-3 yards on eight carries) for the first time in 14 games, dating back to an October 2011 loss to Houston.
