Andrew Maxwell threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler in overtime as the Spartans snapped the Badgers’ 21-game home winning streak.

Michigan State (5-4, 2-3 Big Ten) forced the extra period when Maxwell capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Le'Veon Bell with 1:08 remaining in regulation.

Wisconsin (6-3, 3-2) opened overtime with Kyle French’ 43-yard field goal before turning the ball over to the Spartans, who kept their bowl hopes alive and held the Badgers’ vaunted rushing attack to 19 total yards.

The Badgers took an early lead with 13:44 left in the second quarter when Joel Stave threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Pedersen, and Michigan State answered with Dan Conroy’s 34-yard field goal with 9:13 left before halftime.

After averaging 34.2 points in its last five games, Wisconsin managed only 190 total yards. Running backs Montee Ball and James White were limited to 62 yards on 29 carries.

Maxwell was 24-of-39 for 216 yards for the Spartans, who won despite gaining only 61 yards on the ground but were 9-of-17 on third-down conversions.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The last seven games in the series have been decided by a combined 34 points, with all seven decided by 10 points or less. … The Spartans’ five Big Ten games have been decided by a combined 13 points. … Stave was 9-for-11 for 127 yards before exiting in the third quarter with a left shoulder injury. … The loss ended the Badgers’ 12-game Big Ten home winning streak.
