Arizona State 27, California 17: Quarterback Taylor Kelly threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns as the Sun Devils beat the Golden Bears for the first time in Berkeley since 1997.

New coach Todd Graham has Arizona State (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) off to a strong start thanks to a stout defense that has surrendered only 68 points on the season through five games. The Sun Devils recorded seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss Saturday.

It was a sloppy effort from the Golden Bears (1-4, 0-2) as they incurred 12 penalties for 119 yards. Cal quarterback Zach Maynard struggled in the passing game, completing 9 of 28 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.

California tailback Isi Sofele ran for 105 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries but also had a costly fumble in the second quarter that the Sun Devils converted into a touchdown just before the half.

Sun Devils wideout Kevin Ozier hauled in three catches for 42 yards and two scores.

GAME NOTEBOOK: California leads the all-time series 17-15. … Only one Cal team, in 2003, has recovered from a 1-3 start to earn a postseason bid. … The Sun Devils are outscoring opponents 125-38 in the first half this season.
