Recap: Rutgers 27, Army 12
Nov 12, 2011
Chas Dodd passed for a pair of touchdowns and Mohamed Sanu broke a conference receiving record as Rutgers rolled past Army, 27-12, at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
Sanu had 13 catches for 126 yards, giving him 94 receptions on the season and breaking Larry Fitzgerald’s Big East record for receptions in a season. The former Pittsburgh star pulled down 92 in 2003.
Jordan Thomas returned a blocked punt for a touchdown for the Scarlet Knights (7-3). Rutgers, which still has a shot at the Big East title, returns to conference play next week at first-place Cincinnati.
Dodd let Sanu do most of the heavy lifting but went to different targets in the end zone, hitting Michael Burton for a 3-yard touchdown in second quarter and giving Rutgers the lead with a 38-yard strike to Brandon Coleman with 11:20 left in the third.
The Black Knights (3-7) looked to have the game tied up when Larry Dixon rushed for a 2-yard touchdown with 14:02 left in the fourth to cut it to 13-12. But Alex Carlton, who had connected on a pair of short field goals in the first quarter, missed the extra point attempt.
Thomas’ return with 6:56 left made it 20-12 and Jawan Jamison broke for a 56-yard rushing score with 1:57 remaining to put it away.
