Kain Colter ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as visiting Northwestern stunned No. 9 Nebraska 28-25 on Saturday.

Colter, who took over at quarterback for the injured Dan Persa late in the second quarter, ran for 58 yards and spearheaded the Wildcats’ offensive attack that compiled 207 rushing yards and consistently kept the Huskers at arm’s length.

The sophomore all-purpose threat finished with 115 yards passing and added three catches for 57 yards as Northwestern (4-5, 2-4 Big Ten) recorded its first victory in Lincoln in three tries.

Colter’s first score - a 3-yard run - came on the opening drive in the third quarter and staked Northwestern to a 14-3 advantage.

Colter broke Nebraska’s spirit with his touchdown pass - an 81-yarder to Jeremy Ebert - that stretched the Wildcats’ lead to 21-10 early in the fourth after Taylor Martinez was able to answer with a scoring throw of his own.

Nebraska (7-2, 3-2) made a desperate comeback attempt with a touchdown from Rex Burkhead and two-point conversion from Martinez, but Colter scored from the 1 to cap a clock-killing 13-play drive that left the Huskers staring at a 28-18 deficit with 1:34 remaining.

Persa, the second-most accurate passer in FBS entering this contest, was diagnosed with a soft tissue injury in his left shoulder and did not return after a 10-yard run on the Wildcats’ final drive of the first half.
