Chase Rettig, who had just one touchdown pass coming in, threw for three scores as Boston College cruised to a 45-17 victory over visiting UMass on Saturday.

Rettig connected with Colin Larmond (six catches, 114 yards) for two touchdowns, including a 36-yard scoring play with 5:12 left in the first half that gave the Eagles a 24-7 halftime lead.

BC linebacker Luke Kuechly became the fifth Boston College player to reach 400 tackles and extended his NCAA-best streak of double-digit tackles to 26 games.

Boston College’s senior running back Montel Harris returned to the lineup for the first time this season after recovering from a pair of knee surgeries. The senior ran nine times for 27 yards to leave him 98 yards short of Boston’s College’s all-time rushing record held by Derrick Knight.

The Eagles were averaging 80.7 yards rushing the first three games, but had 193 Saturday

Hampton Hughes set the tone by intercepting a pass on the first play from scrimmage and the Eagles drove for the score -- a 1-yard toss from Rettig to Lars Anderson.

UMass, ranked 19th in the FCS poll, was only outgained by 76 yards but turned the ball over four times – two for touchdowns.
