Seth Doege was 40-of-44 passing for 401 yards and five touchdowns as Texas Tech rolled to a 59-13 victory over host New Mexico on Saturday in a game that was delayed twice because of lightning.
Doege's completion percentage of 90.1 percent broke the NCAA record for highest percentage in a game with 40 or more completions. Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury held the previous mark at 83.3 percent in 2002.
Eric Stephens rushed 14 times for 92 yards, and his 77 rushing yards in the first half were the most by a Texas Tech running back since Shannon Woods in 2008. Stephens also set a career-high with 63 receiving yards.
Texas Tech (2-0) had 624 total yards, including 410 in the first half. Wide receiver Darrin Moore, who became the first Texas Tech player with three touchdowns in the first half since Michael Crabtree in 2007, had nine catches for 118 yards.
New Mexico (0-3), which fell to 2-27 under coach Mike Locksley, scored its touchdown on Crusoe Gongbay’s 2-yard run midway through the second quarter. Quarterback Tarean Austin was 8-for-24 passing for 187 yards and one interception.
