Danny O'Brien's 52-yard pass to a streaking Kevin Dorsey set up the go-ahead field goal as host Maryland beat depleted Miami 32-24 on Monday.
Nick Ferrara's 32-yard kick with 1:39 left put the Terps up two, and Cameron Chism's interception return for a touchdown sealed the win for Randy Edsall in his Maryland coaching debut.
Miami played without eight players, including seven returning starters, who were suspended for accepting impermissible benefits from former booster/convicted Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro.
Despite missing their defensive leader, suspended linebacker Sean Spence, the 'Canes allowed Maryland just one touchdown in seven red-zone trips.
But it wasn't enough for new coach Al Golden, whose gritty team was hurt by a slew of penalties.
The Terps' first ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010, O'Brien threw for 249 yards in the first half alone. Maryland, however, repeatedly failed to cash in after long drives.
Miami sophomore quarterback Stephen Morris, starting in place of suspended senior Jacory Harris, used his scrambling ability on a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He was extremely accurate until throwing the late interception on 4th-and-4.
The 'Canes also committed a huge turnover right before halftime. Running back Mike James fumbled and the ball bounced right into the arms of Terps defensive lineman Joe Vellano, who rumbled 29 yards for a touchdown, giving Maryland a 20-14 lead.
