Clemson’s Andre Ellington is no C.J. Spiller, but he was plenty good enough against Maryland on Saturday afternoon.
Spiller, the former Tigers All-American tailback now playing for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, was in attendance as Ellington accounted for two touchdowns to pace the Tigers to 28 unanswered points in rolling past the visiting Terps, 31-7.
Ellington rushed for just 41 yards on 16 carries and a score and returned a kickoff 87 yards for another touchdown to help Clemson snap a three-game losing skid. The Tigers defense limited the Terps to 44 yards rushing, recorded three sacks, forced three turnovers and seven punts.
Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien completed 24-of-45 passes for 302 yards, but also tossed three interceptions.
The Terps forged a 7-3 advantage following a halfback pass from Da’Rel Scott back to O’Brien for a 4-yard scoring strike with 11:33 left in the first half.
Spiller was honored at halftime when his No. 28 jersey was retired, and he reciprocated by donating $100,000 to his alma mater.
