Recap: Utah 56, New Mexico 14

Terrance Cain got another start for Utah, and he made the most of it.

Cain threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the No. 14 Utes to a 56-14 victory over New Mexico on Saturday.

Starting for the second straight week in place of injured quarterback Jordan Wynn, Cain completed 20-of-23 passes for 247 yards, and ran for a 12-yard TD late in the second quarter for Utah (3-0).

Cain, who improved to 9-1 as a starter at Utah, was 15-of-18 for 124 yards and a TD, and ran for another score in the first half as Utah jumped out to a 21-0 lead. He threw two more TD passes in the third quarter, and the Utes scored on defense and special teams to enter the fourth with a 49-14 cushion.

Matt Asiata opened the scoring for Utah with a one-yard TD run in the first quarter, and Cain accounted for two TDs in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Matt Martinez ran an interception back 35 yards for a score, and Shaky Smithson returned a punt 73 yards to put Utah ahead 42-7 with 10:40 to go in the quarter.

Cain hit Jereme Brooks down the middle for a 75-yard TD, and connected with DeVonte Christopher for a 33-yard scoring strike in the third as Utah outscored New Mexico 28-14 in the quarter.

Tauni Vakapuna ran for a 24-yard TD in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Tarean Austin was 15-of-27 for 124 yards with a TD and an interception for New Mexico (0-3).
