Adam Robinson rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown and Ricky Stanzi passed for two scores and rushed for another as ninth-ranked Iowa beat instate rival Iowa State 35-7 Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
Robinson, who carried just 14 times, led an Iowa offensive charge that gained 481 total yards, 277 on the ground. Stanzi completed 11-of-18 passes, his second consecutive sharp performance, as the Hawkeyes (2-0) beat the Cyclones for the third straight season.
Iowa State (1-1) managed 276 yards, including 196 passing yards from quarterback Austen Arnaud.
Iowa dominated from the start, outgaining the Cyclones 290 yards to 85 in the first half en route to a 28-0 lead. Stanzi completed 8-of-12 for 128 yards and two touchdowns – 9 yards to Marvin McNutt and 2 yards to Allen Reisner – and also scored on a 1-yard run.
Running back Jewell Hampton, making his season debut after missing the opener on a suspension, scored the other touchdown from the 1. Hampton finished with 84 yards on 21 carries. Robinson had 114 rushing yards in the first half.
Robinson’s 39-yard touchdown with 6:54 left in the third closed the scoring for Iowa. The Cyclones’ lone score was an 8-yard pass from Arnaud to Darius Darks with 1:56 left in the game.
Iowa plays at Arizona next Saturday. Iowa State opens its Big 12 schedule at Kansas State.
