Recap: Wake Forest 54, Duke 48

Wake Forest went to a balanced attack behind quarterback Tanner Price to hold off visiting Duke 54-48 in both teams' ACC opener Saturday.

Price split first-half duties with option specialist Ted Stachitas, then took over and finished with 190 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-19 passing with one interception. He had 56 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Stachitas led Wake Forest (2-0) with 77 rushing yards on nine carries.

For Duke (1-1), quarterback Sean Renfree was 28-of-44 for 358 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Conner Vernon caught eight for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Duke's Desmond Scott rushed for 122 yards on 11 tries.

The score was tied at 35 at halftime, before both sides tightened up on defense early in the third quarter.

Wake Forest went ahead 41-35 at 8:12 in the third on a 38-yard pass from Price to Marshall Williams. A 46-yard field goal by Duke's Will Snyderwine cut it to 41-38. He also converted a kick from 38 yards in the fourth quarter.

Wake Forest drove 73 yards in 10 plays to make it 48-38 early in the fourth. Price hit Danny Dembry for a 23-yard score. Later a 79-yard, 13-play drive all but clinched the Deacons' win at 54-41 before Renfree's final strike of 51 yards to Vernon.
