James McCann's two-run double capped a four-run, eighth-inning outburst, and the Detroit Tigers held on for a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins at Minneapolis on Tuesday.

Victor Alcantara (1-0) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to collect his first major league win for Detroit (64-93). Shane Greene got the last three outs for his 32nd save.

The Tigers entered the eighth trailing 1-0. Harold Castro got the rally going against Trevor Hildenberger (4-6) with his first major league hit, a leadoff single. He stole second as Jeimer Candelario struck out.

Christin Stewart drew a walk, and Nicholas Castellanos smacked a tying single. Niko Goodrum then lined a single to center, bringing home pinch runner Victor Reyes with the go-ahead run.

Following a fielder's choice, McCann ripped an opposite-field double to make it 4-1.

Joe Mauer had two hits and scored twice for Minnesota (72-84). Jorge Polanco and Jake Cave each added two hits and an RBI.

Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull, who gave up six runs in four innings to the Twins in his first career start last Wednesday, held Minnesota to one run in six innings.

The Twins scored in the first on Mauer's single and Polanco's RBI double to deep right center. Turnbull then settled down and struck out the next three batters.

Detroit center fielder JaCoby Jones made a baserunning error in the second inning. He reached on a single, stole second and got to third on a throwing error. He then got caught off the bag by Kohl Stewart on a comebacker and was tagged out.

Minnesota committed its third error of the game in the sixth, and Detroit still remained scoreless. Castellanos reached when second baseman Logan Forsythe booted his grounder. That put runners on first and second with one down.

Stewart then induced Goodrum to fly out on a 3-0 count and also retired Mikie Mahtook on a routine fly ball.

Stewart, who followed Gabriel Moya out of the bullpen after a scoreless first, gave up just two hits and struck out five over six shutout innings.

After Detroit's big eighth inning, Minnesota scored in the bottom half against Joe Jimenez on Cave's RBI single. The Twins then loaded the bases with two out, but Alex Wilson retired Forsythe on a fly ball.
