NEW YORK -- Yonder Alonso homered with two outs off Aroldis Chapman in the top of the 11th inning, lifting the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Alonso entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth and reached on a walk against Dellin Betances. Two innings later, he produced his biggest hit since joining the Mariners on Aug. 6 when he lifted a 2-1, 100 mph fastball well over the center field fence.

It was Alonso's second homer with Seattle and 24th overall. It also was the third career homer to a left-handed hitter by Chapman (4-3), who was removed from his closer's role last week after allowing Boston rookie Rafael Devers to homer on his 103 mph fastball in the 10th inning on Aug. 13.

Before Alonso's homer, the Mariners took a 1-0 lead on Mike Zunino's 19th homer in the fourth off CC Sabathia. The Yankees tied it in the eighth when Aaron Judge scored from first after center fielder Guillermo Heredia misplayed a double by Didi Gregorius for an error.

Alonso's hit lifted the Mariners to their seventh win in nine games but so did their pitching, which escaped numerous jams.

The Mariners worked out of bases-loaded jams in the third, fourth and eighth innings.

Left-hander Ariel Miranda escaped in the third and fourth while Nick Vincent struck out Todd Frazier to end the eighth after David Phelps issued two walks when the score was tied.

James Pazos (4-4) retired the side in the 10th and Edwin Diaz posted his 30th save by striking out Aaron Hicks after Brett Gardner stole second on a play that the Yankees won a replay challenge on.

Sabathia allowed one run and five hits in seven innings.
